My name is Rebecca Kelley, and this is my thirteenth year teaching social studies at Prairieville Middle School. My goal is to make learning about history an enjoyable experience for your child, while instilling in them the ability to objectively analyze historical events. By the end of this school year, students will be able to apply their knowledge of the past to the events of the present, and have the capability of making accurate and informed comparisons.

Our curriculum takes us from early pre-contact America to the ratification of the Constitution in 1787. Along the way, we explore many different events in American history with the objective of examining how they have affected us today.
Access to the Internet is vital to this class, and we will use it practically every day - please make sure that your child charges his or her Chromebook every night.

Do you give homework?
Beginning in late August, students will have a weekly homework assignment (called a Think-Back) that is due every Thursday. Students have a week to complete the assignment, and should use the notes on my website (see below) to answer the questions. GOOGLING ANSWERS IS NOT ALLOWED. There will also be homework for test corrections and any VIP work that isn't completed at school.
How much should my child be studying for your class?
Students should be studying their content notes for a few minutes each night. History is a content-based subject, which requires students to remember many facts, events, and dates. To ensure that they are studying, pop quizzes will periodically be administered. There are study tools available on each unit page of my class website (see below).
How can I help my child study for your tests?
Per guidelines from the Louisiana Board of Education, our social studies tests are a combination of source-analyzation questions and content-knowledge questions. You can help your child to study for the content questions by helping them to study their notes for a few minutes every night. Missing or incomplete notes can be found on my website (see below).
Do you accept late work?
Yes, but a letter grade is deducted for each day the work is turned in past the due date.
Do you give extra credit?
There will be one bonus opportunity offered per quarter. If a student successfully completes the bonus assignment, he or she can bump up one test grade by one letter. In order to participate in bonus opportunities, students must have completed all homework assignments for the quarter.
