Hi! My name is Erin Barbier, and I will be your child's science teacher. I graduated from Louisiana State University with a Master of Arts in Teaching Degree and a Bachelor of Science in Education. I have taught at Oak Grove Primary the past 14 years. I live in Prairieville with my husband, Stephen, my 9 year old son, Andrew, my 7 years old son, Jacob, and my miniature schnauzer, Roux.
This year we will be using 3 science curriculums. We will use a mix of OpenSciEd, IQWST, and teacher supplemented materials. The programs line up with the state standards and use many labs and demonstrations to help teach science. The curriculums rely on student participation a great deal, so I'm expecting students to come to class willing and able to contribute.
1. What is now covered in 6th grade Science?
Sixth grade science does not focus on one area of science. We will cover standards and objectives in physical science, life science, and earth and space science.
2. What should I expect homework to be?
It depends. Since Science can be a hands-on subject I don't usually assign written homework. However, if a student does not complete the classwork assigned to them they will be responsible for completing the classwork at home. However, notes should be reviewed as a study aid daily. Beginning in quarter 2 the students will be assigned Retrospects. These will be open-note, at home quizzes. The students will be given 2 weeks to complete each Retrospect.
3. Do you do labs in class?
We do have lab activities in class. We try to do labs as often as possible and will sometimes request outside materials for labs to be done. The labs are normally done in groups of 2-4.
4. Do you accept late work?
I do not accept late work. The only exception is that you may "buy" a late pass using your pride points. It is 10 pride points. You must have your points and assignment ready for the next day you are physically in my classroom.
