Literacy Overview
Fifth grade reading continues from fourth grade as a "reading to learn" year. We use a variety of reading strategies and continue working with text features to improve comprehension of both fiction and nonfiction text. Students will work to write letters, narratives, opinions, and research pieces. Through authentic writing, students will also work on grammar and mechanics.
What this means is that students read text and take information from that text to increase knowledge and understanding of a given topic. We focus primarily on informational text, which supports learning in topic areas such as science and social studies. Students will also spend time reading literature and analyzing stories.
