Here is a link to the common core standards for English Language Arts (ELA): https://webnew.ped.state.nm.us/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/ELA_Standards1.pdf
These standards are addressed mainly in students' homeroom classes, but are addressed in our reading class as well, and students develop skills that can help support them in accessing grade level ELA standards.
What is the “Science of Reading”?
The science of reading refers to a body of research from the fields of education,
cognitive psychology, developmental psychology, and neuroscience, that explains how
individuals learn how to read and best practices for reading instruction.

of how to teach reading through the science of reading lens.
Scarborough's Reading Rope is made up of lower and upper strands. When all these component parts intertwine it results in skilled and accurate, fluent reading with strong comprehension.

These areas are connected by “white matter pathways.” The stronger a reader is, the stronger the signals across the pathways. According to Dr. Nadine Gaab, timely intervention and instruction can improve these pathways, improving student’s reading comprehension.
Various research based curricula are used in each group, to target the various skills on the reading rope above. Each curriculum is listed below, along with a link to some information about the curriculum. If you have any questions about what programs are used in your student's group, please reach out to me.
Bridge the Gap - this program is used to address phonemic awareness skills. See this link for info about the program: https://heggerty.org/programs/bridge-the-gap/
Fundations - this program is used to address phonics, decoding, and spelling skills. See this link for info about the program: https://www.wilsonlanguage.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/Fundations-Program-Overview-Levels-K-3.pdf
UFLI Foundations - this program is used to address phonics, decoding, and spelling skills. When students take home decodable passages to read, they are tied to the lesson they have been working on in UFLI in their group. See this link for a website for parent info on the program: https://sites.google.com/aklearns.org/ari-ufli-parent-resources/home
Tools 4 Reading - Resources from this program were used to make a sound wall for students to practice articulatory gestures (or mouth formation) when correctly producing sounds. See this link for more info about sound walls from this program: https://www.95percentgroup.com/products/sound-walls/
iReady Reading - iReady is a program all teachers have access to, but it is used in our classroom for reading fluency passages for the groups and students that are focused on developing reading fluency skills. If students come home with a fluency passage, it is from this program. Check out the "Resources" tab above to get more information on fluency passages, and how you can support this skill at home.
