Gifted/Enriched Mathematics

GRADES 6, 7 & 8

This is a class for students identified as gifted in math from initial gifted testing (Woodcock-Johnson) OR advanced scores (or equivalent) on state and/or district standardized testing. Gifted student path for math:

  • 6th grade: Gifted Math 6

  • 7th grade: Gifted Math 7

  • 8th grade: Algebra I or Honors Algebra I, which is a 9th grade course offered at Hoover Middle School, and taught by a teacher qualified in high school math. This is considered a General Education class, but is at the accelerated level.

Gifted Math 6 and Gifted Math 7 are accelerated classes designed to meet the needs of gifted students with high-level abilities in math by teaching grade-level and above math skills through real-world and situational problems. The 6th grade curriculum prepares students for the rigors of 7th grade Pre-Algebra. Students who successfully complete the Pre-Algebra curriculum will be ready to take Algebra I or Honors Algebra I in eighth grade.

8th Grade

Algebra I is an advanced class available to students who qualify through teacher recommendation, test scores and current classroom performance. In Algebra I, students will develop an understanding of the basic structure and language of Algebra, a tool used to solve a variety of real-world situations. The students will use tables, models and graphs to interpret algebraic expressions, equations and inequalities to analyze functions. Students who successfully complete this course are eligible to receive high school credit.

Honors Algebra I is designed for students desiring to take an advanced level mathematics course and who may be preparing for a career in Mathematics, Science, and/or Engineering. Students are challenged to exceed the standards of the Algebra I course in order to prepare them for the rigor of more advanced classes such as AP Calculus. An extra .025 will be added to the cumulative high school GPA for each semester of an Honors class successfully completed.

April DeAngelo earned her teaching degree in Pennsylvania and has lived in Albuquerque, N.M., teaching elementary and middle school gifted students, since 2013. She has been teaching gifted math at Hoover Middle School since 2017. She is highly qualified in Middle Grade Math and has a Gifted Endorsement. Mrs. DeAngelo's overall goal is to challenge the students and push them to “extend effort”. Students will experience difficult challenges in a safe environment where they learn from mistakes and are encouraged to persevere with grit and a passion for math. Mrs. DeAngelo lives in Albuquerque with her husband, two teenage sons (one in college and the other in high school), and their adorable dog named Iris. She enjoys many arts, including pottery, and jewelry-making; joins her husband fly-fishing periodically; and loves completing the mathematical calculations to help with home improvement projects.
