On this page you will explore the main information regarding our online learning system, Edgenuity. I will explain the pacing of the system and how best to manage your time to be successful, the purpose and usage of the 3 different grades in Edgenuity, some of the important tools and features in Edgenuity, my plagiarism policy, my essay and project re-do policy, understanding Studentvue and how to check your official grades, how to set up the family log in for Edgenuity, and finally a calendar of important dates such as finals and school holidays.
To log into Edgenuity, students will enter their student ID# followed by aps (1234567890aps) as their username and their self created password. If a student has forgotten their password they can contact the eCADEMY front office for assistance. If a student is logging into Edgenuity for the first time, their password will be their student ID#.
Pacing and Time Management
For all classes in Edgenuity labeled ECAD, students have a full semester to complete the courses. For all classes labeled, BlendED, students have only 9 weeks to complete their courses.
The system automatically increased the target percentage every morning approximately 1.5% for ECAD courses, and approximately 2.5% for BlendED courses.
The system allows students to access and work on their courses 24/7, which means they are able to work as far ahead as they please. However, due to the increased target completion each day, students must complete at minimum 1 topic (ECAD) or 2 topics (BlendED) each day in each class to stay on track.
When students are on track in their courses, the top bar of their course will show blue, or green if students are ahead.
When students log into their Edgenuity home page they will see their classes organized into tiles with their course completion and Actual Grade. When students click on the Course Map (top right corner of the tile) they will see the activities they need to complete as well as the date they need to complete each activity in order to stay on track. From this page students can also view the grades they received for each assignment as well as any feedback left by their teacher.
Grades! Why are there three?
On Edgenuity progress reports there are three grades. Here is a quick breakdown of what they mean.
Overall Grade- This grade represents the quality of work being turned in by the students. This grade is only referenced if below a 60%.
Actual Grade- This grade is a calculation of the Overall Grade multiplied by the student's course completion percentage. If the student is on track or ahead, this grade will be the same as the Overall Grade. If a student is behind, this grade will be lower than the Overall Grade. Students are considered to be at danger of failing the course if they have a Relative Grade below 65%.
Relative Grade- This is the "walk away" grade. This grade takes in the Overall Grade of assignments completed and accounts for all incomplete assignments in the course as Zeros. At the end of the term, this is the grade students will receive on their transcripts. This grade increases slowly as assignments are completed. When students finish the course 100% and take the final, all three grades will be the same.
Tools and Features
Edgenuity is loaded with great learning tools and features. I have already explained above how to access the Assignment Calendar and Progress Report. From the Organizer, in Reports, you can also access your Session Log, which records the amount of time spent on your courses each day and how much of that time was spent actively completing work and what was spent idle.
Also in the Organizer, in Reports, you can view the scores you've received on your assignments and the feedback left by your teachers for how to improve in the future.
Finally, in Organizer, under communication, you can email your instructors and read emails sent by your instructors.
In each course there are also tools to assist in your online learning. For each video there is a transcript that has the written script for what the video is stating, as well as a section for e-notes, and a glossary. These can be found by clicking the plus sign (+) in the upper right corner of the assignment screen. The e-notes have a tendency to disappear. so I recommend taking notes in a word or Google doc or on paper in a notebook.
Students are also able to access the videos and instruction as many times as needed to understand the content and can pause the video to take comprehensive notes.
Plagiarism! Don't do it!
APS has a zero tolerance Plagiarism policy. In my courses I do not allow plagiarism. Plagiarism is any section of an essay or project that has been copied from another sources without proper citation and giving credit to the original author for their ideas. I do not give credit to any written assignment that is plagiarized and will not allow students to re-do plagiarized assignments. To understand Plagiarism and how to prevent it click the "Plagiarism Tutorial" button below.
To prevent plagiarism consult Purdue Owl by clicking the "Purdue Owl's MLA Style Guide" button below. All essays and projects should adhere to MLA style formatting and citations with a Works Cited page and all sources used cited properly.
The use of Brain.ly and Quizlet.com are also prohibited for any part of online courses. The use of these cites to complete online work is considered cheating and will result in a zero for the assignment. It is encouraged that students take notes and use outside cites to help students comprehend the material, however it is never acceptable to copy and past questions into google to find the answer or to copy and paste answers from outside sources into Edgenuity.
Grading and Business
60% is passing. In order to pass the online courses the lowest possible Relative Grade students can receive is a 60%. Therefore, students should receive no lower than a 60% on all assignments, quizzes, tests, essays, projects, labs, etc. If a student receives below a 60% on any task in Edgenuity, it is encouraged that students email their Teacher of Record (which can be found in their Studentvue) to reset the assignment.
For my online courses, I will grade all written assignments that are not automatically graded within 24 business hours. Also, I will reset any assignment, quiz, or unit test only when students show me their notes for the topic.
