Produced by the Regional Educational Laboratory (REL) Southwest, this video discusses the context of language acquisition and development among Native American students in New Mexico. The video features researchers and educators discussing the importance of schools supporting both native language acquisition, development, and preservation and English language acquisition and development with Native American students. Culturally responsive education practices, connecting with tribal leaders, and community engagement are additional key themes discussed in the video.

  • In this module, I will explain why there are Diné language BMEP, as well as, other Indigenous language BMEPs. Colonialism has tremendously impacted Indigenous languages and cultures through westernized education and assimilation practices. I’ve included links in the video that highlight current projects and documentaries that will inform educators and educational leaders on the time requirements, bilingual laws, and bilingual program models. I hope the viewer will see the importance of having Indigenous children have access to their respective BMEPs.
