"Students do not have achievement gaps we have to fill, they have gifts we need to leverage" -Dr. José Medina
In this PD we reflect on the importance of CLR, define what Bridging is and intentionally implement bridging in the classroom to create opportunities for students to transfer skills and knowledge from one language to another. This PD is 2-3 sessions: one learning session and 1-2 working sessions.
PED Canvas Course
Implementing Bilingual Multicultural Education Programs
(launched September 2024)
Implementing a BMEP requires special knowledge and skills that aren’t necessarily included in university coursework for teachers and administrators. That’s why PED created “Implementing Bilingual Multicultural Education Programs,” a Canvas course designed specifically for New Mexico state-funded BMEPs. Course modules are crafted to give you a strong foundation so that you can feel confident that your BMEP is doing its best to serve New Mexico students and is following the requirements outlined in the Bilingual Multicultural Education Act and 6.32.2 NMAC.
“Implementing Bilingual Multicultural Education Programs” is an asynchronous course, so it can be taken at your convenience and at your own pace. Its four modules include the following topics: BMEP goals and eligibility; instructional requirements; endorsement and endorsement waivers; program models; home/heritage language assessment; initial and continuing BMEP applications; Nova data reviews; the Annual Progress Report; program monitoring and renewal; program improvement plans; funding; family engagement; instructional materials, and more. Knowing that you all are busy professionals, we have kept assignments short and directly connected to the task of implementing a BMEP. Participants who complete the course will earn a Knowledge Badge.
It is our hope that all state-funded BMEPs take advantage of this Canvas course, especially new programs. (BMEPs put on a program improvement plan will be required to take it.) Although the course is designed for administrators, faculty, and other BMEP leaders, the information in this course is intended for everyone involved in the BMEP, from the front desk staff to educational assistants and other personnel. We hope that everyone who completes the course will share their knowledge with their educational community. The more that our families and staff know about BMEPs, the better it is for our students. We invite you to become an expert!
