Advising Support

• Add drop/advising happens during the first week of class and is not required

• During the first week of class, you can make changes to your schedule (add and/or drop classes) without it counting against you.  If you need to make any changes to your schedule, please contact your advisor as soon as possible to set up a add/drop advising meeting to discuss these changes. 

  • Please note: Half semester classes have different dates for this so please check with your advisor on making changes to any half semester courses. 

First Years, spend time before early advising reviewing all of the major options from your catalogue year (the year you start at App State) by going to the Bulletin (click here). Make a list of the majors you are most interested in and bring this list to your early advising meeting. 

• Early advising happens early in the semester during both fall and spring semesters. This meeting are required for first year students. Other students can request an early advising appointment if they would like. 

• The goal of this meeting is to spend time getting to know you, checking in on how you are adjusting and how you are feeling about the semester, and understand your unique goals for the semester and college. 

Please prepare for this meeting ahead of time and write notes during it (these meetings are collaborative with active invovlement by both student and advisor). 

• Registration advising happens in the middle of the semester during both Fall and Spring semesters. This meeting is required for all TRIO SSS students. 

• The goal of this meeting is to spend time checking in on how things are going and plan classes for the following semester. In the Fall, we meet and discuss classes for the Spring. In the Spring, we meet and discuss classes for Summer and Fall. You will register for Summer and Fall classes on the same day.

• In addition to the three types of advising listed above, we are also here to support you if you need anything. You are always welcome to request additional advising appointments to receive support academically or personally. 

• We also have an open door policy which means you are welcome to pop by anytime and as long as we are not in a meeting and our door is open, you can come in and chat or ask questions! 

• Once you declare your major, you will be assigned to a major advisor whose name you can see on Degreeworks. Click here to login to your DegreeWorks page. 

• Your major advisor does not replace us but becomes an additional support to us. 

• We advise students on all the different majors on campus and on general education. This means we cannot be the expert in any specific major. You will often need to directly communicate with your major and/or departmental advisor. 

• Once you are assigned a major advisor, we recommend that you meet with them at least once per semester as well.
