Rock Description: Schist is a metamorphic rock meaning it is formed under very hot temperatures and very high pressure. It has large grains that you can view with your eyes and it forms in layers which you can visible see.

Uses of schist:
Since schists is so strong and durable it is used to build houses
Schist can be shiny and come in an array of colors so people use it to make jewelry and/or decorations

Is Schist found in NC?
Schist isn't found too often in NC but if it is then it would be in the Mountain region because that's where metamorphic rocks form. Schist is typically found in countries like Ireland and Brazil.
FUN FACT: Schist has a variety of compositions and is usually named after whichever mineral is most present in the sample!
Ex. A schist with mostly chlorite would be a chlorite-schist.
