Rocks and Minerals of North Carolina

Welcome! Want to learn more about rocks and minerals of North Carolina? You came to the right place! You can navigate around this website to find out about what rocks and minerals are currently mined in the state, what they are used for, and a few other tidbits.

Have any other questions after you look around? Email Appalachian State University geologists at: askageologist@appstate.edu. Feel free to also send along any photos of unique rocks that aren't able to identify, they'll help you out!

Students:

Use the navigation menus above to help you find the rock or mineral you are trying to learn about!

Teachers:

The information is written to be student-friendly (Gr.4-12 or so, although it would also be appropriate for advanced students in Grades 1-3). There are some state-specific references such as where in the state the geological resources are found, but other than that, the information will also be useful to anyone teaching about rocks and minerals to K12 students. This website can be used for the NC Rock Showcase Activity (includes handout). For feedback or questions, please email Marta Toran (toranml@appstate.edu) Outreach Coordinator for the Department of Geological and Environmental Sciences at Appalachian State University.

We also have physical samples of rocks and minerals to share, so let us know if you need any specific ones to add to your classroom rock collections.
