The main inspiration for this piece is a specific quote by my favorite author, Neil Postman:
"We believe that there are certain things people 'have,' certain things people 'do,' and even certain things people 'are'. These beliefs do not necessarily reflect the structure of reality, they simply reflect the habitual way of talking about reality"
At a glance, the subject of this piece seems to be a simple depiction of a butterfly. Au contraire, this fabricated butterfly represents growth and transformation. Every butterfly starts out its life as a caterpillar, and gradually, with time, transforms into its final form.
I decided not to add color to this piece because I didn't want to depict a certain species of butterfly. The idea is that no one or no thing is required to have a set place in society in order to grow.

This is an ink sketch of a honey bee that I did in 2020.
This was not for a class, just a free draw.
Honey bees symbolize new beginnings, hard work, creativity and wisdom. All four are values that I hold very dearly.

This is a sketch of a man holding a trombone. I played the trombone throughout all of middle school and my first two years of high school (in addition to doing color guard for marching band). I decided to include this because trombones were the first subject I started drawing according to real life.
