What is a Capstone?

The Capstone is a culminating project that provides a way for students to demonstrate the knowledge and skills they acquired during their secondary school years of education. High school students are asked to demonstrate their ability to apply key knowledge and skills by planning, completing and presenting a culminating project linked to one or more areas of personal interest. Utilize the Senior Website links in the left hand corner of this home page to find a project overview, description of the different options available, and a step by step process to complete your Senior Capstone Experience.

Virtual Capstone Options Available

To align with social distancing guidelines established by both the State and National governments, South Windsor High School have developed virtual options to help you complete your Capstone requirement. This will allow you to start your project immediately, as all capstone requirements can be completed by utilizing distance learning technology.

Selecting a Faculty Adviser

The adviser for your project is one of the most important assets to utilize navigating through the capstone experience. They will serve as a mentor to run ideas through, a resource to help you complete the requirements and the person that will check off your written work. It is helpful you select someone that you can connect with or has some expertise in the area of your experience.

This year the process for picking an adviser will be slightly changed from the past few years.

Current Juniors may begin reaching out to faculty members to ask them to be their capstone adviser for the 2020-21 school year. Juniors can contact teachers using email, or google classroom, to request that they serve as their adviser. Please remember that most certified staff members are available to serve as Capstone advisers, but can only accept 3-5 students on a first come, first served basis. Students who are working on group projects must share the same adviser. Students will have until May 18th to request an adviser. If a student has not selected an adviser by that date, one will be assigned to the student.

For students interested in requesting Mrs. Davies, Mrs. Lang, or Mrs. Larson as an adviser, please email Mrs. Devaney at edevaney@swindsor.k12.ct.us. Please be aware that these teachers will not begin reviewing proposals until after they return from leave.
