Learning Journeys Curriculum Guide

1st Grade

"Learning Journeys” is a series of grade level guides to the South Windsor Public Schools curriculum. These guides provide information about curricular units, core texts and resources, and references to curriculum standards and expectations for students based on their grade level.

In elementary school, the core content areas (Literacy, Math, Science and Social Studies) are taught by the classroom teacher. Other subject areas (Spanish, STEM, Physical Education, Art and Music) are taught by K-5 teachers specifically dedicated to those subjects. Teaching and learning may also be supported by specialists who provide additional, targeted resources to students (e.g., literacy, math, English learner, and special education teachers).

The guide is not intended to be a substitute for conversations between families and teachers. Our talented and dedicated elementary school teachers are committed to helping each student reach his/her full potential. They have been trained in instructional strategies to differentiate instruction in order to meet diverse needs and to facilitate continuous educational growth. If you have questions at any time regarding units of study or materials used, please contact your child’s teachers.

Thank you for partnering with us to ensure that South Windsor maintains its commitment to high quality schools led by talented educators and support staff who are dedicated to the success of the children and families we serve. Your role in your child’s educational experience is invaluable. In addition to two opportunities each year to participate in parent-teacher conferences, parents will be invited to multiple parent workshops throughout the year which focus on learning more about your child's curriculum. We hope you find all of this information helpful as we partner together to make this a successful and exciting year for your child.
