Welcome to this Summer edition of Roe Green Round Up.
As you will see, there have been many varied activities to showcase our children's creative talents. The sporting and musical achievements have been outstanding this year as well.
We were also delighted to meet so many of you during the Curriculum Fortnight Open Evening so that we could share with you the wonderful art, design and drama activities.
I would like to say a particular thank you to Mr Dregan and family, Mr Norris and Mr Cyrus for their community act of kindness repairing the steps in our playground.
Finally, I would like to wish you all a happy six weeks holiday and a fond farewell to our Year 6 students who will be moving to Secondary School in September.
Best wishes,
Ms Loosemore and the Staff of Roe Green Juniors
Community Heroes!
On Saturday 28th June, Roe Green Junior School held a Community Day to celebrate teamwork, generosity, and our shared commitment to improving our school environment.
We were incredibly fortunate to have Mr Dregan—a skilled builder and valued member of the Roe Green community—volunteer his time and expertise to carry out vital repairs to the arena steps in our front playground.
He was joined by his father and son, alongside our site supervisor Mr Norris and caretaker Mr Cyrus. Working together, this fantastic team ensured the steps are now safe and secure, providing a better and safer space for our children to play.
Mr Dregan’s selfless act is a shining example of community spirit in action. We are extremely grateful for his time, effort, and generosity. Thanks to people like him, Roe Green Junior School continues to thrive as a warm and supportive environment for all.
A huge thank you once again to Mr Dregan and everyone involved—your kindness truly makes a difference.
At the close of each academic year, this prestigious prize is awarded to only two pupils per class from each year, for following our Olympic Values of Friendship, Respect, Equality, Determination, Inspiration, Courage and Excellence. Teachers highlight pupils who have demonstrated particularly notable examples of our values throughout the year. We are all very proud!
Gordon Brown Residential Trip
a review by Gabriel
In May, Year Five went to the Gordon Brown Centre, and it was a good experience. While we were there, we did activities like rock climbing, archery and laser tag (which was my favourite). One of the most interesting parts of the trip was the low ropes course because there were lots of different obstacles to overcome. The first night was dreadful! The toilet doors were being slammed and everyone kept talking. But, over the next few nights, I managed to get some sleep. Overall, I enjoyed my experience at Gordon Brown and I would encourage people go (maybe with some earplugs for the nighttime).
Curriculum Fortnight
This year's creative extravaganza was based upon the theme, 'Imagine and Create: Art, Music, Writing and Design'. As it is clear to see from these photographs, Roe Green pupils' crafted some fabulous work whilst having an enormous amount of fun! All of this enjoyment was linked to learning on a wide-range of themes. Year Three investigated the cultures of several different countries: Australia, Japan, Spain and Mexico. Year Four researched lions, elephants, peacocks and swans. Year Five's theme centred around modern art, with each class focussing on a different art style from the following: Expressionism, Cubism, Surrealism and Impressionism. Year Six looked deeply at the cultures of North American Indigenous people. As these pictures clearly demonstrate Roe Green pupils enjoyed an enriching experience throughout the Curriculum Fortnight.
Music Celebration
Roe Green Junior's ended this year's musical journey with a celebration of everything we learnt this year. Every child performed an instrument and the whole school enjoyed the beautiful sound of performances in a wide range of musical styles such as on djembe drums, ukuleles and recorders. Fabulous!
Year 3 Welsh Harp Visit
Year 3 visited the Welsh Harp as part of our learning in Science about Plants. We attended a workshop at the Welsh Harp Education Centre, where we learned about bees, pollination and different types of seeds and seed dispersal. We then went for a wander through the woods, where we got to see lots of different species of plants, have a look at the beehives and at the end do a fun craft activity where we collected flowers, leaves and seeds to stick onto a butterfly.
3S Class Assembly
This year 3S performed our assembly about the International Day of the Family, which fell on the 15th of May. We thought a lot about what family means to us, what challenges families can face and what we can do to help and support our families and family members. Children wrote poems about their families, with some reading them aloud during our assembly. Our goal was to show how much our families mean to us!
3G Class Assembly
3G's class assembly, called "We Are a Family, We Are a Village," was all about being kind and helping each other. 3G pupils shared some inspiring examples of how our class is like a family and a village, where everyone belongs and cares for one another. It was a lovely way to share the importance of kindness and teamwork.
3R presented an assembly all about Easter, one of the most important celebrations in the Chrisitan calendar. The class shared the story of Jesus’s crucifixion and resurrection, explaining how Easter represents hope, renewal, and new life.
The children took everyone on a journey around the world! From France to Bermuda, Greece to Sri Lanka and Poland to Romania. They shared fun facts and showed exciting props displaying how people celebrate the same holiday around the globe, in their own unique traditions!
Just like our diverse school community, the assembly also represents how diversity brings prosperity and joy. Well done to 3R!
4J's Inspiring Assembly on Growth and Openness
4J delivered a powerful and engaging assembly titled 'We Are Teachable', reminding the school community of the importance of being open-minded, resilient and ready to grow. Through a lively mix of acting, humour and music, the class explored what it means to be teachable, not just in lessons but in everyday life.
From sharing a positive attitude and kindness to showing resilience and empathy, each scene highlighted the values that help us learn and grow. One key message stood out: being teachable is not about being perfect. It is about having the courage to ask questions, make mistakes and try again.
The performance encouraged respect for different cultures, beliefs and experiences, showing that real learning happens when we are open to others. Songs like The Climb and I Am Trying Again added a heartfelt touch, capturing the spirit of determination and growth.
4J’s performance was a thoughtful and inspiring reminder that learning never stops and that we all have the power to grow when we stay curious, humble and ready to learn.
4G Kindness Assembly
4G shared a story about kindness in their class assembly. They showed how small acts of thoughtfulness can make a big difference to others. It showed that by helping and supporting others, the feeling of loneliness and despair can melt away.
The children were amazing! They learnt their lines and knew all the cues! We also had musical talents which shone through when the children sang as a whole class, performed a duet and a solo.
What an amazing class you are, 4G! Keep on shining, Stars!
During this term, Year 4 pupils thoroughly enjoyed exploring drama and developing their acting skills. Using the theme of King Arthur, the children took part in a series of engaging sessions focused on performance, character development and storytelling. These lessons provided a creative space for pupils to express themselves through acting, movement and dance. Through role-play and re-enacting scenes inspired by the legendary tale, children were encouraged to step into different characters, work collaboratively and use their voices and bodies to communicate emotion and meaning. The sessions not only brought history and literature to life, but also helped pupils build self-confidence, teamwork and presentation skills.
By performing in front of their peers and engaging in group performances, children developed a stronger sense of stage presence and creativity. Many students found their voice through drama, gaining the confidence to share their learning in a dynamic and meaningful way. Overall, it was a rich and rewarding experience that helped Year 4 discover the power of storytelling and the joy of learning through the performing arts
Year 4 Enjoyed Drama and Acting Through King Arthur Theme
Year 5 Working with Ordnance Survey Maps
Year Five have been learning about the features of Ordnance Survey maps and how to use them to locate Roe Green Juniors and also where we live. Pupils learnt how to use compass points, how to understand grid references and map symbols and also how maps are drawn to scale by cartographers.
Those pupils not attending Gordon Brown spend two mornings making pizza from scratch! Pupils tried their hand at kneading dough to create the pizza base and chopping and preparing fresh, healthy ingredients to use as tasty toppings! Yum!
Some of our Year Five pupils had an amazing trip to Wembley Stadium which included a behind-the-scenes tour.
The children saw learnt so much about how a top-level football game works and just how many different people are involved. The tour included visiting the gym, seeing famous players' kits in the changing room, visiting the dugout where players sit on the bench and even getting to pretend to be a player by walking to the pitch through the players' tunnel!
The day was both informative and such a huge amount of fun, that the children had to give a press conference - what a treat!
Year Five pupils were also lucky enough to visit the British Museum for a very special augmented reality tour of the Parthenon Marbles. Children used tablet computers to guide them through the collection, learning more about these fascinating objects as they travelled through their Greek learning 'odyssey'.
Year 5 Drama Workshop on ‘The Vikings’
After half Term, Miss Ash took each Year 5 class for a Drama workshop on ‘The Vikings’. Each workshop took place over a whole afternoon. It began with a ‘journey’ on a Viking longboat to seek and explore a ‘new’ land: battles, burning homes and building a-new followed.
After participating in this mimed introduction, the children were encouraged to look at the artefacts displayed and to share their knowledge of the Vikings from their history lessons. The children had remembered a lot of information which they were able to draw upon. It was explained that during the workshop the children would be revising and learning some techniques that they would be able to use to present their own imaginary Viking Saga. Games were played in groups of five or six to:
Explore ‘configuration’, (using our bodies in to create an object such as a Viking Longboat).
Revise vocabulary linked to the Vikings by solving word puzzles.
‘Freeze Framing’ (creating a scene/ tableau), was also a skill revisited from lessons in Year 4.
Each group was tasked with using the skills explored with improvised dialogue and /or narration to present a Viking Saga that would tell the history of how a group of Vikings came to settle in a specified country. Finally, the groups performed their sagas to the class and were rewarded with well - earned applause.
Written by the Year 6 News Team
As the summer term draws to a close, Year 6 pupils at Roe Green Junior School have had an exciting and eventful few months filled with learning, discovery, and preparation for the future.
The term began with a thought-provoking Cyber Choices presentation by the Metropolitan Police on 28th April. The officer spoke to pupils about staying safe online, making smart digital decisions, and understanding the consequences of cybercrime. Many students said they felt more confident about using the internet responsibly. “It made me think twice about what I share online,” said one pupil.
From 12th to 15th May, Year 6 tackled their SATs week with determination and resilience. The atmosphere was calm and focused, and pupils supported one another throughout. Teachers were incredibly proud of everyone’s effort. “I was nervous at first, but I felt proud when I finished,” shared a student.
On 19th and 23rd May, pupils visited the Royal Courts of Justice in central London. The trip was both educational and inspiring, giving students a glimpse into the British legal system. They explored real courtrooms and even took part in a mock trial. “I got to be a barrister and argue a case—it was brilliant!” said one enthusiastic participant.
The Metropolitan Police returned on 20th May for a powerful Knife Crime Prevention session. The officer spoke candidly about the dangers and consequences of knife crime, encouraging pupils to make safe choices and look out for one another. The session was impactful and sparked meaningful discussions in class.
On 3rd June, Year 6 took part in the Wizard Theatre Drug Awareness Workshop. Through engaging performances and interactive discussions, pupils learned about the dangers of drug misuse and how to make informed, healthy choices. “It was really eye-opening and made me think about how to stay safe,” said one pupil.
From 5th to 20th June, Year 6 participated in Careers Week, exploring a wide range of professions and future pathways. Pupils met professionals from various industries, including healthcare, engineering, and the arts.
On 17th June, a judge visited the school, continuing the theme of law and justice. Pupils were fascinated by the judge’s robe and gavel, and asked insightful questions about life in the courtroom.
Finally, on 23rd and 24th June, the majority of Year 6 pupils attended their high school transition days. They explored their new schools, met future classmates, and took part in fun activities. While some felt nervous, most came back excited and reassured. “I was worried at first, but now I can’t wait to start Year 7!” said one smiling student.
As Year 6 prepares to say goodbye to Roe Green Junior School, they leave with wonderful memories, new knowledge, and a sense of pride in all they’ve achieved. We wish them the very best in their next adventure!
Dental Pop Up Event
We were very lucky to host an event supported by the Brent Health Services and the Brent Dental Team. Pupils were able to have a dental check up and learn healthy habits to help look after their teeth and general oral health. As well as this brilliant opportunity, a team of other services helped children learn about mental health (alongside the Barnado's Children's Charity), a healthy balanced diet and sustainable travel. What a sweet treat!
We are incredibly proud to share that our pupils recently took part in filming a special documentary celebrating climate action in schools across Brent. The filming, led by Brent Council took place right here at Roe Green Junior School and captured the brilliant work our children have been doing to protect our planet.
Our pupils confidently showcased some of the key sustainability initiatives we are passionate about, including our Gardening Programme, the upcoming Eco Refill shop and our Drive Free Day campaign. They also sent powerful messages about how these actions help reduce emissions and promote care for the environment. It was a proud moment for everyone involved as they shared their ideas and took on the role of young climate leaders.
We are thrilled that Roe Green Junior will be featured in this inspiring short film, which will be premiered during London Climate Action Week in June. We look forward to seeing our pupils’ efforts celebrated and hope it will inspire even more schools to join the journey towards a greener future.
We are proud to share the success of our very first Eco Refill Shop, launched on 27th June here at Roe Green Junior School, in partnership with Roe Green Infant School and Kingsbury High School.
The atmosphere was truly inspiring as pupils, staff, parents and members of the wider community came together in support of this brilliant initiative. There was a real buzz across the school as families brought in their bottles and containers to refill with a selection of eco-friendly products, all proudly made in the UK. From laundry liquid to hand soap, it was fantastic to see so many of you getting involved and making sustainable choices.
The collaboration between our schools demonstrated the power of working together for a shared goal in protecting our planet and reducing plastic waste. The children showed great enthusiasm and leadership and the support from staff and families has been brilliant! Thank you to everyone!
We are already looking forward to our next Eco Refill Shop event, which will take place on Thursday 17th July. Do not forget to save the date, bring your containers and join us once again in making a difference!
Together, we are building a CLEANER, GREENER future!!!
The Eco Refill Team
Wednesday 9th July saw Roe Green Juniors turn up in team colours to be the best they could be for the teammates. Events included swimming, short and long-distance running, relay races, the British classic event of the three-legged race as well as some extremely fun team games like under and over.
Team G took the overall win in the end, but all the teams were shining examples of respectful, supportive sporting behaviour which makes us so proud to belong to Roe Green Juniors. Thank you to all the parents that came along to support and make the day as wonderful as it was.
On Wednesday 25th June, Roe Green faced of against St Robert Southwell in the Brent North League Final. Both teams started the match tentatively as expected with the teams cancelling each other out when attacking and defending. It was physical match where both teams gave it their all in the first but with no reward.
The second half was a much more open game with St Robert Southwell opening the scoring from a free kick, they then doubled their lead to make it 2-0. With 15 minutes of the game remaining our star striker Khairullah managed to pull a goal back with a lovely finish to the bottom right corner.
Soon after Roe Green had a free kick from about 30 yards out, up stepped Elijah who put the ball in the back of the net to make it 2-2. Roe Green where growing in confidence and after a bursting run into the box from our right back. Mohammed he manged to squeeze the ball into the bottom left corner to give Roe Green the lead. With 10 minutes remaining St Robert Southwell were on the attack and brilliant save from Alexandra managed to protect our lead. Her quick thinking by seeing Kahirullah making a run, she kicked the ball all the way down the pitch for Khairullah to bravely beat the opposition keeper to the ball and heading it into the back of the net to make it 4-2 to Roe Green.
The children erupted with screams and joy and the parents and teachers were ecstatic! Roe Green saw out the rest of the game to bring home our first ever Football Trophy, the team will go down in the history books and should be proud of their performance.
On Wednesday 3rd June, Roe Green Girls competed in their first ever cricket tournament. For some children it was their first time they played cricket and what a way to start the tournament by winning their first match. A collective performance from the girls with Evelina and Hooda putting in match winning performances. With two games remaining the second game didn't go to plan with Roe Green coming up against a tough opponent and unfortunately losing the game. Our third and final match was a close encounter where Roe Green lost by a couple of runs in a topsy turve match where on another day Roe Green could have come out on top. The girls thoroughly enjoyed their experience and hope to be back next year with more experience and skill to go further in the tournament.
On Tuesday 8th July Roe Green Boys Cricket Team to the field to play in a six team tournament. Roe Green started their first match very well with excellent bowling and keeping the opposition to a low score. However when batting to win the game a flurry of late wickets cost Roe Green with the team losing by 4 runs.
After the disappointment of the first game, the children redeemed themselves and won the second game by 10 runs. Another tight game saw Roe Green lose on the last ball in a high scoring game. After the morning session Roe Green had won one and lost two.
With the sun shining in the afternoon and a well deserved break, Roe Green started the fourth game strongly and an excellent all round performance saw the children winning the game comprehensively.
The final game gave the children to win a medal, and a solid all round performance from all the children saw Roe Green post 53 runs in 10 overs without the loss of a wicket. The children then restricted the opposition to 33 runs by bowling and fielding really well. Roe Green brought home another medal by finishing third in the overall standings. An excellent day out for the cricket boys!
Individual Success: Alexia's Taekwondo triumph!
As well as working hard at school, lots of Roe Green pupils achieve amazing things outside of school. This term, we celebrate Alexia from Year Six winning a gold medal from the London Taekwondo Academy. Alexia's hard work and dedication paid off as when she was rewarded this prestigious prize. Well done Alexia!
If you have a story of success you would like to be in the Round Up next term, please email a photograph and a description of your child's achievement to Mr Guest at dguest@rgjs.brent.sch.uk.
Our total whole-school attendance for this term is 93.5% whilst attendance for the whole year is slightly higher at 94.5%. The higher our attendance the greater our learning and also, as you can see from this term's Round Up, the more fun!
