Welcome to this Spring edition of Roe Green Round Up.
As you will, see there has been a great deal happening this term.
I believe that this reflects the focus that we have on providing opportunities for the children, both inside and out of school and opportunities to celebrate his or her talents.
It also reflects out beliefs in "Staying safe on line", "Looking after our environment" and the importance of "Reading and Drama".
I hope that you have a happy holiday and that you enjoy this edition.
See you on the 22nd April.
Best wishes,
Ms Loosemore and the Staff of Roe Green Juniors
Roe Green’s
Got Talent!
We were delighted to hold Roe Green’s Got Talent in January. As you can see from the photos, a huge number of children took part (84)and even more were auditioned. There was a great variety of performances including singing, dancing, instrumentals and Martial Arts.
This opportunity to shine is so valuable for building confidence and self-esteem. Thanks to you, the audience, the children had a great time!
School Council Encourages
Acts of Kindness
A big well done to our amazing school councillors for introducing Acts of Kindness in assembly! They have been busy this term spotting kindness all around our school and handing out stickers to children showing thoughtful actions. It has been wonderful to see so many pupils spreading positivity - keep up the fantastic work, everyone! Let us keep kindness going!
World Book Day
Children arrived at school in their pyjamas on Thursday 6th March, World Book Day. The sleepy theme was chosen to celebrate the great tradition of a bedtime story as we believe there is no better way to end the day than snuggled up with a good book! Classes from different year groups swapped classrooms and shared a story with each other. Research shows that reading to your child boosts their vocabulary, confidence and mental health so there are many reasons why we all should be reading more!
Choir
The RGJS Voices Choir made it to the semi-finals of Brent Schools Choir of the year. We did not make the finals however as a first attempt we did very well. The song was called ‘Something inside so strong’ Mr Turner from Brent Music Service was very proud of the children and their performance was excellent.
We have learned what we need to do next time!
Fantastic Fundraising!
Many thanks to all our parents who supported the Scholastic Book Fair this term by buying a book to enrich their child's reading. Sales of books over the week raised £1236.00 of credit which the school can now spend on books!
Comic Relief
For the 40th Red Nose Day on Friday 21st March RGJS was awash with a sea of red as many pupils came dressed in their reddest outfits. Proceeds from the sale of special edition red noses went to help all the charities supported by Comic Relief.
Easter Poetry Competition
A huge well done to our fantastic school councillors for hosting and organising a brilliant Easter competition! They received an incredible number of poems and did a fantastic job selecting a few finalists to read their work in assembly. A special congratulations to our winner, Khyra in Year 5, for her outstanding poem! Thank you to everyone who took part—your creativity and effort made this competition truly special!
Our class assembly on World Book Day was a fantastic success! The children worked extremely hard, putting in so much effort to bring their performances to life. From engaging storytelling to creative presentations, they showcased their love for reading in the most wonderful way. Their dedication and enthusiasm truly shone through, and we could not be prouder of them. It was a joy to see their confidence grow and their hard work pay off. Well done to everyone involved!
Year 3 Drama
This term, Year 3 have been attending drama lessons with Miss Ash. The theme was Greek Myths to link to the Year 3 literacy lessons which in turn linked to their history topic on Ancient Greece.
Year 3 have participated in five lessons. The lessons have been exploring stock characters from Greek Myths and playing drama games to explore the themes from several different myths.
Some of the games have been:
‘What’s in the box?’
‘What’s the time Mythical Monster?’
‘Who am I?’
‘The Maze’
The children have worked individually, in pairs and small groups to create characters, mythical beasts, mazes, ships and ultimately scenes to retell and perform the story of ‘Theseus and the Minotaur Mythical Beast’ with an alternative and happier ending. They have used mime, movement, freeze - framing and speech in their class performance before taking their final bow.
Well done year 3!
Miss J. Ash
Year Three visit the Wallace Collection
This half term, Year 3 visited the wonderful Wallace Collection Museum for a day of art appreciation and workshops about Classical myths. Luckily, the weather was beautiful which made the day even more fantastic.
The children enjoyed a tour of the Wallace Collection portrait gallery, chances to sketch their own interpretations of myths, and even design their own fearsome sea monster during the lovely workshops delivered by Wallace Collection staff! We had a great day, many thanks to the museum staff and to the children for being on their best behaviour and resisting the temptation to touch all of the gorgeous artwork we saw.
4R Celebrates International Day of Mathematics
On 14th March, 4R celebrated International Day of Mathematics 2025. The class amazed everyone by transforming into famous mathematicians from history! They brought these mathematics legends to life, sharing fascinating stories about their extraordinary discoveries and contributions. From Isaac Newton's ground-breaking ideas to Ada Lovelace's impressive equations, the assembly was both informative and inspiring!
4J’s Exciting Trip to the Houses of Parliament!
4J had an amazing time visiting the Houses of Parliament! During our trip, we learned about the important people who work there, the history behind Big Ben’s name and how the UK Parliament is made up of three parts: The House of Commons, the House of Lords and the Monarch.
We noticed that the House of Lords has red chairs, while the House of Commons has green. We also discovered that members of the House of Commons are elected, whereas members of the House of Lords are selected.
The view of the River Thames was amazing and made our visit even more special. We also learned that the famous Big Ben is actually the name of the bell, while the tower itself is called the Elizabeth Tower!
It was a privilege to explore the historic Grand Hall, famously used by Henry VIII for parties and to walk up the King's Stairs. After the tour, we participated in an engaging workshop where we completed quizzes and worked in groups to reflect on everything we had learned.
Overall, it was an unforgettable experience!
Year Four's Welsh Harp Trip
This term,Year 4 students went on an exciting trip to The Welsh Harp, where they became brave explorers of nature's wonders. They ventured into the fascinating world of minibeasts, learning about their habitats and the impacts humans can have on our rivers and wildlife. The children had a fantastic time pond dipping, where they identified a variety of insects and larvae.
During a scenic walk through the woods, they discovered some of Britain's common plant species and explored the habitats of animals such as bats and birds.
Adding a splash of science, our young scientists conducted experiments to test the Brent River's water for pollutants. With the lovely weather on our side, it was a day full of learning, laughter and lots of fresh air!
A Tasty Finish to the Term!
Year 4 didn’t just end the spring term with exciting learning and trips. They also finished with a delicious treat! In the final week of term, the children had a fantastic time making mouth watering ENCHILADAS as part of our Design and Technology (DT) learning. We explored the importance of a healthy diet and practised key cooking skills, from chopping to mixing and assembling. The enchiladas were a big hit, filled with tasty vegetables, beans, cheese and tomato sauce. Children in 4S went the extra mile and made their own guacamole using fresh avocados, making the meal even more exciting and flavourful. It was a fun, hands-on experience that combined creativity, teamwork and of course GREAT FOOD!
Bikeability Cycling Proficiency Training
Year Five pupils enjoyed a week of Level 2 Cycling Proficiency training in the Spring Term. The course aimed to develop children's cycling skills with a particular focus on road safety. Towards the end of the week pupils navigated the streets around Roe Green and received lots of positive compliments from the cycling instructors Eddie and Bill. Well done!
Year 5 Science Museum Trip
Year 5 visited the Science Museum in London to explore some artefacts and see exhibits to go along with our learning at school. The children went to several exhibits, including Space and Flight where they put their knowledge about forces into action to complete challenges. 5S especially enjoyed the Space exhibit where we got to see parts of real equipment that have travelled into space.
5S Class Assembly:
Roe Green's History!
On Friday 14th February, 5S took the stage to present their class assembly. It was all about the history of our very school - Roe Green Junior School! The class took us through a brief overview of thousands of years of history for our local area before diving into nearly 100 years (93 to be exact) of our rich history. They covered moments in time, eras of peace and war and one of our school’s most memorable ex-students - George Michael. The performance ended with ‘waking everyone up before go-go-ed’ by singing and dancing to WHAM!’s biggest hit, ‘Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go’.
Year Five Geography
The children in 5R have enjoyed working and exploring ordnance maps, locating the school, their homes and exploring further their local area in their Geography lessons.
Year 5 DT: Cushions
We designed and learnt three types of stitches: running, blanket and back stitch. We used our new found skills to design and make our own cushions.
Year 5 Geography Fieldwork: A Local Walk
Year 5 explored the local area as part of the Geography topic. They visited various places around the school and conducted a survey on Kingsbury High Road. They investigated whether Kingsbury caters for the needs of its community.
Year 6 were given a very important talk on the importance of keeping safe on our transport system. Some of the top tips included: being a respectful and responsible citizen as we travel on the buses and the underground system; looking after the buses and trains; wearing a helmet if we are cycling and standing well away from the kerb when waiting for a bus. All the children were given a wallet for an Oyster card which they were shown how to obtain. The speaker kept the children engaged and interested throughout.
Martha Leads the Way in Sustainability!
We are proud to share that Martha, our Year 6 Eco Warrior, recently represented the student voice of Roe Green Junior School in an interview with Beth Newman, the Brent Schools Climate Action Manager.
During the interview, Martha spoke passionately about the sustainability initiatives our school has taken to tackle climate change. She shared her vision of why she chose to become an Eco Warrior and the positive changes she hopes to make in our community. Her enthusiasm for protecting the planet was clear as she highlighted the importance of working together to create a greener future.
Martha also raised important concerns about local environmental issues, including the impact of the roundabout on Honeypot Lane. As a school, we are incredibly proud to have such a dedicated student championing sustainability and making a difference.
Stay tuned for more updates from our amazing Eco Warriors!
Year Six Careers Workshops
Mrs Dodhia arranged two workshops which included a series of talks which would help our students think of their future career paths. The talks included those by a boat builder, a nurse and an engineer. The talks touched on the paths which the speakers took to ensure they were successful in their chosen fields. They emphasised the need to follow your dreams but to be flexible; to work very hard at school and to ask questions to develop an enquiring mind. However, probably the most important aspect of the talks were that they challenged the stereotypes which people can have about who should be in a particular profession. For instance, the nurse was a young man and the boat builder was a woman. Women were also speaking about their jobs as engineers. So, the important message here was that anything is possible to anyone.
Riana's Recycling Report Featured in Brent Environmental Network Newsletter!
We are delighted to share a report created by Riana, one of our dedicated Year 5 Eco Warriors, who is passionate about recycling. Her insightful report highlights the importance of reducing waste, reusing materials and making sustainable choices to protect our planet.
Riana’s hard work and commitment to environmental awareness have earned her the opportunity to have her report featured in the Brent Environmental Network (BEN) newsletter. This is a fantastic achievement and we are thrilled that her voice will help inspire others across Brent to take action for a greener future.
Well done, Riana! Keep up the great work in leading the way for sustainability at Roe Green Junior School.
On 1st April, Roe Green Junior School faced off against Wykeham Primary School in a thrilling football match that ended in a 1-1 draw. Both teams displayed incredible effort, sportsmanship, and respect for one another throughout the game.
Wykeham took the lead in the first half, with a well-worked goal that gave them the advantage. Despite this setback, Roe Green never lost their spirit and fought back with relentless determination. As the match wore on, it became clear that Roe Green were the stronger side, creating numerous chances and dominating possession. However, Wykeham’s goalkeeper stood tall, making a series of fantastic saves that kept his team in the game.
In the dying moments of the match, with time running out, Roe Green found a last-minute equaliser which sent their players and coaches into a frenzy.
Despite being held to a draw, Roe Green could hold their heads high, knowing they had given everything on the pitch and be proud of their performance, demonstrating excellent teamwork and respect for the game.
On the 4th April, 5R shared their class assembly with the whole school and parents. The assembly was about Ramadan and EID.
They told the story of a boy called Ibrahim, who was fasting for the first time and learns that he has a lot to be thankful for.
The class did a magnificent job of performing to the school - well done 5R!

Wizard Theatre Workshop:
Staying Safe
The theme of keeping the children safe ran through the Wizard Theatre workshop. Wizard have been coming to give workshops to Year 6 for a number of years and they are always thought provoking and engaging. The workshop facilitators gave the children useful tips on:
Being aware of their surroundings on public transport
Being aware of dangers presented by strangers
Not engaging in conversations designed to deliberately distract.
Working together as a team and thinking about their role as responsible citizens within the community.
Individual Success!
As well as working hard at school, lots of Roe Green pupils achieve amazing things outside of school. This term, we would like to celebrate the fantastic success of Riana and Matteo. If you have a story of success you would like to be in the Round Up next term, then email Mr Guest at dguest@rgjs.brent.sch.uk with all the details.
