We have included photos and news of the wonderful variety of assemblies, concerts, trips and clubs that have taken place since September. I hope that this ROUND UP gives you joy and pride in the efforts of the children and staff.
I wish you all a happy, healthy and peaceful holiday and look forward to seeing you in 2025.
Best wishes,
Ms Loosemore and the Staff of Roe Green Juniors
The Autumn Term reached a dramatic peak with several magical performances of The Jingle Book, a tale of adventure, goodwill, and the magic of Christmas. With the atmosphere of Narnia, the comedy of The Grinch, and the fantasy of The Box of Delights. The Jingle Book tells the story of what happens when four children discover an ancient book with magical powers that leads them on a quest to save Christmas.
After a week of intensive auditions, modifications and additions to the script to create extra parts rehearsals began. The entire school team joined in preparations for the show. Staff sewed costumes, painted backdrops, designed light shows, crafted props, choreographed dances and much more. Year Five & Six pupils busied themselves gathering costumes, learning lines, songs and dance moves to put on a magnificent performance, first in the day to the entire school, culminating in two fantastic evening performances which many in our community came along to enjoy. Thank you to the whole staff who have supported and enabled the children to participate in a project that encompasses so many skills and provides them with an experience that they are sure to remember.
The choir have been having fun singing with Mr Turner from Brent Schools Music department. The children have wonderful voices and have now been entered for the Primary Brent schools Choir of the Year. The children have also been preparing for the Christmas Production ‘The Jingle Book’.
The children sang with passion and learned the words so that the performance looked very professional. Well done choir!
Year 3 visited the Brent Museum to learn about the history and geography of the Kingsbury area. The children had a chance to investigate the museum and take part in a workshop about Kingsbury. We looked at maps and historical photographs, artifacts and even had a chance to dress up. Thank you very much to the parents who came on the trip and helped make it such a success!
This term has been super exciting for Year 4. 4R, 4G and 4S have just returned from an unforgettable trip to the majestic Houses of Parliament and we are honoured to be the first group in Roe Green Junior School to ever do so! We can’t wait to tell you all about it.
Our adventure began with a guided tour. Walking through the magnificent Palace of Westminster, was like stepping back in time.We even walked through the halls the King himself has walked. For a moment, we felt like royalty too!
It was a real treat to have the opportunity to visit both the House of Lords and the House of Commons and see where decisions that affect the whole country are made.
One of the highlights of our day was meeting an actual Member of Parliament! Meeting an MP face-to-face was incredible. He shared some amazing stories and answered our curious questions which made our trip truly special!
In the end, we had an exciting workshop at the Education Centre, where we played games to put our knowledge to test.
4S celebrated Christmas in style with their fun retelling of the Nativity story. Mary and Joseph were joined by an angel, three kings, shepherds, sheep and a dancing donkey!
There may be no room at the inn, but there is plenty of room for Christmas spirit at Roe Green!
5J voted to recreate the story of The Highwayman from the poem by Alfred Noyes. We chose the Highwayman because we were learning a lot about it in class. However, our version of the story was set in modern times. For example, instead of stealing silk and diamonds, the Highwayman would steal smartphones and iPads! I felt very nervous when I heard that we would be performing a class assembly in front of more than four hundred people, but after a few rehearsals I started to feel more confident. Afterwards, I felt very proud as everyone was clapping and it made me feel very loved and important.
Everyone in Year Five has been weaving patterns into sheets of punchinella to create a repeating pattern using wool. Punchinella is the leftover material after sequins have been punched out of the sheet, so it is shiny and bright just like our designs. They were really fun to make and they looked great as you can see in the pictures.
Hello, my name is Fatima. On Wednesday, 4th December, I cooked stir fry in school. In DT we have been learning how to prepare healthy food.
First we washed our hands, after we sat down on the tables and in front of us were chopping boards and the vegetables, then we got to start.
The ingredients that were provided were noodles, mushrooms, carrots, popping peas, soy sauce and bell peppers. We used chopping boards, knives, peelers and graters. We were also allowed to bring in our own vegetables from home.
I enjoyed this experience because we got to do a little bit of everything like stirring the food and peeling carrots. I rate this experience 10/10.
It has been a busy term for Year Six, we have staged four class assemblies, been on trips to the RAF museum, acted in the Winter production of The Jingle Book and of course worked very hard in our lessons!
The picture on the right shows the whole school showing our respect for Remembrance with a two minute silence in the front playground
All four classes enjoyed their class assemblies this term; 6R taught us about Black History month, 6G showed us why Circle Times are so important, 6J told us the story of Diwali and 6S helped us all mark Remembrance Day.
We have learnt all about World War 2 this term in History and in English while reading Kensuke’s Kingdom. We also did Drama lessons based on the war and had lots of fun at the RAF museum where we went back in time to a classroom during the war! The teachers did not seem so kind back then! Sakina in 6J said, “It was so interesting learning about Evacuation - to think about how difficult life must have been for children back then.”
As part of Anti Bullying week, Year 6 wrote about people who inspire them. We had some incredibly moving pieces of work and it was lovely to see how many children wrote about members of their families. Here are a few of the pieces on display in school:
We are excited to announce a new initiative at Roe Green Junior School aimed at addressing Climate Change and promoting healthier habits: Drive-Free Day! This will be a dedicated day each week when our school and community focus on reducing car journeys and embracing walking to school.
For those who may live far away or have other commitments that require driving, we encourage a Park and Stride approach – parking nearby and walking the final stretch to school. Even small changes can have a big impact on our environment.
To ensure this initiative works for everyone, we conducted a ballot where each of us selected the day we thought would be most suitable for Drive-Free Day. We have now gathered the responses and the most popular day was Friday. In the new year, you will find out more about when the campaign will officially begin.
At Roe Green Junior School, we are proud of our tradition of working together as a community. We believe that no challenge is too great when we unite for a common goal. Let us make this initiative a success—a movement that sets an example of how small, consistent actions can help protect our environment.
In recent weeks, Roe Green Football Club (RGFC) have been playing a set of matches with both boys and girls teams.
RGFC Girls’ Team
The girls’ team played their first ever tournament on Friday 29th November where we managed to win one match out of a total of five games. Even when we weren’t winning we still kept a winning attitude and we all really enjoyed taking part as you can see in the photograph
RGFC Mixed’ Team
The mixed team played three games this season. The first match was a cup match which we lost 4-3, but the next match was a friendly game that we won 6-0! We had a winning attitude that day which meant that we were not showing off to our opponents even though we were really pleased with our performance. Our most recent match was on Tuesday the 3rd December, which was another cup match. We played against a really good team and we lost 6-4 which sadly knocked us out of the league.
Overall, we played with respect, pride and as a team assisting each other to score some astonishing goals. Mr Dunn said that every loss is an opportunity to learn from and even if we lost we still had a fun time playing and representing RGFC.
This term we submitted over eighty stories to the BBC 500 Words competition. We are pleased to say that four of our entries made it through to the next stage of 500 Words:
The Adventures of Lenny the Tiger by Kian 3J
Adventure of Coco - The Lip Balm by Colette 3S
A Chaotic Family by Ayat 5R
How My Trip Went From A Nightmare To A Dream by Indiya-Rae 6G
These four pupils produced brilliantly engaging stories of which we are extremely proud, but we must not forget the wonderful work of all the other pupils who submitted stories - we are proud of them all!
WE LOVE COOKING!! In our Cooking Club this half term, we have made a Mexican Bean Salad, Vegetable Pasta, Baked Potato with stir fried vegetables and cheese as a topping. In the last lesson, we learnt how to make Eggless Cookies. We learnt how important it is to help with the washing and cleaning up after the cooking as well. We also learned about kitchen hygiene and safety when cooking. Both the boys and girls were involved in these sessions and the activities within.
“I always go home and try out the recipes which I learn in the Cooking Club!”
Many thanks for all your generous donations of food to our Christmas Foodbank collection which we have donated to the Trussell Trust. The Trussell Trust provides emergency food and practical support to people in their hardest moments. It works with partners and local communities to ensure everyone gets the right help long before they need a food bank.
Last year’s overall attendance average was 94.9%. So far this year Roe Green Junior School’s average has increased to 96%! We are thrilled to have improved attendance despite the number of coughs and colds that have been going around this term. Congratulations!
