The Safe Place is a place where students can go to change their inner state from upset to composed to optimize learning. The goal of the safe place and our response to upset is to change the child's inner speech. Inner speech (regulated or not) stays with us for the rest of our lives.
During these unprecedented times our students are experiencing stress and trauma at higher rates. These virtual safe spaces can be used during distance learning to help them self-regulate and cope with these challenging times. Below you will find resources that can be used to incorporate a safe space in your classroom.
Use the steps of Conscious Discipline in your safe place to be intentional. It is not only a place to learn how to regulate, but a teaching center to help students understand their emotions and reactions and practice calming strategies to work towards problem solving and healthy skills.
