We ask that students read at home nightly for at least 20 minutes. Students can read to you, you can read to your child, or both.
Into Reading Curriculum:
NSD implemented a new literacy curriculum in 2022-2023, called Into Reading by HMH. Into Reading supports Science of Reading. Click here to read about the Science of Reading
About Into Reading:
Builds foundational reading skills (explicit and systematic phonics instruction)
Builds topic knowledge and vocabulary related to unit and lesson texts
Provides lessons on decoding skills to build comprehension strategies
Connects literacy instruction and content areas (science, social studies, and the arts)
Provides student choice during independent practice with authentic texts
Provides writing opportunities for students to communicate their understanding and thinking through multiple writing modes. Students will learn about the writing process and discuss their work.
Contains assessments to inform teacher instruction during small group or individual conferences
Supports:
All students will receive additional supports through differentiated intervention or acceleration groups. Groups will be phonics based as well as reading and comprehension instruction.
What did we learn? Parents may receive a weekly overview of what was covered in the Into Reading lessons.

i-Ready Reading:
Through diagnostic testing (3 times a year: Fall, Winter and Spring), students will receive supplemental interactive lessons and practice through i-ready. The lessons are based on student individual needs and current skill level. Students will learn at a pace that is just right for them.
