The trombone is a musical instrument in the brass family. Nearly all trombones use a telescoping slide mechanism to alter the pitch instead of the valves used by other brass instruments. The trombone made its first appearance in the 15th century, but only started being used as an independent instrument in a symphony in the early 17th century. A musician who plays the trombone is called a trombonist or trombone player.
The trombone can be found in symphony orchestras, concert bands, big bands, marching bands, military bands, brass bands, and brass choirs.
