Do you want to make friends and interact with people in mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, or with overseas Chinese? Do you want to discover cultural differences between East and West? Do you know learning a second language very different from your native tongue will help develop your critical thinking skills?
Come to learn the most spoken language in the world: Chinese! While you learn you will have fun through holiday celebrations, music, movies, and an annual field trip to Chinatown. Our Chinese program is open to all students from the 100 to 500 level.
See what Mrs. Haining's students say about the reasons you should learn Chinese:
· Chinese is one of the most common languages in the world. And it is a very beautiful language with a lot of history.
· You should learn Chinese because of the beauty in the Chinese characters and story behind each character which relates to the character’s definition.
· The Chinese people are major consumers in our industries, so knowing Chinese is an advantage when getting a job.
· I have learned that anyone, even if they don’t come from a Chinese background, can be good at learning Chinese.
· I have learned that the Chinese language is simple. Chinese characters have radicals that help me guess the meaning of the word.
· It’s fun and challenging to learn Chinese.
Here are some surprising facts about Chinese:
· Chinese grammar is relatively simple. Unlike English, French, German or Japanese, Chinese has no verb conjugations (no need to memorize verb tenses!) and no noun declensions (gender and number distinctions).
· Chinese characters use radicals as building blocks. Learning a number of commonly used radicals can help you guess the meaning and pronunciations of characters.
