Why Assessment?

Assessment serves as a toolkit. When used properly, it allows you to improve student learning and success at the course or activty, program, and institutional levels.

What is ONE thing that - if students knew it or understood it or could do it - would have the greatest impact on their success?

For more, read Ever Wonder… Why Assessment? on the GCC Center for Teaching, Learning, and Engagement blog.

Q: Is it within your control? Is your department responsible for student learning in this area?

  • Yes! Move to the next question.

  • No. Share your idea with the appropriate person or department. Your idea may be the key to their one thing.

Q: Is it malleable? Do you have the power to change it through an educational or behavioral intervention?

  • Yes! Move to the next question.

  • No. Save the idea for later and consider how else you could answer the ONE thing question.

Q: Is it feasible? Is it realistic to implement given the time and resources you have available?

  • Yes! Keep going.

  • No. Save the idea for later and consider how else you could answer the ONE thing question.

If you answered YES to all three questions, make it happen. We'll help.

Our toolkit is overflowing and we have people and resources to support you. We also can facilitate your connection with the Center for Teaching, Learning & Engagement (CTLE), Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Council (DEI), and the Office of Institutional Effectiveness (IE).

As you move from idea to implementation, we will work with you to answer these questions:

  • Motivation: How do you know students need support with _____?

  • Intervention: How could you help students with _____?

  • Assessment: If you helped students with _____, how would you know it was working?

  • Sharing: How can others learn from the work you did helping students with _____?
