Below you’ll find a brief description about each type of assignment and the estimated time to complete each type. Here are a few things to note about these assignments:
The mandatory assignments (First Thoughts and Module Reflections) can’t be skipped.
You are expected to complete three of each other assignment type.
Detailed instructions are posted weekly in Canvas.
This is the equivalent of completing 1-2 assignments per week.
You can complete or participate in more assignments, if you want to.
You must meet these minimum requirements or you will fail the class.

First Thoughts
First Thoughts
Requirement: one per module (5 total)
Estimated time to complete: 15 minutes
At the start of each module, you will write a short reflection about what you think you already know about the module's question, what you hope to learn, and what you expect to find. This assignment is not graded for accuracy; it is graded on whether you did the assignment authentically and thoughtfully.
Module Reflections
Module Reflections
Requirement: one per module (5 total)
Estimated time to complete: 60 minutes
At the end of each module, you will record a short reflection (3-5 minutes) in your own voice (via video, audio, or slides with voiceover). You will look back at your First Thoughts, talk about what you learned (with specific references), and end with a question you are leaving the module with along with a concrete next step for pursuing it. This is your space to think out loud about your own learning.

Reactions
Requirement: 3 by end of semester
Estimated time to complete: 10-15 minutes
These activities will ask you to react to what you are learning, usually in the form of a question. There are no “right” or “wrong” answers to these questions. Typically these questions will ask you to connect what you are learning to your own views, opinions, and life. These should be short, but always include something concrete from the lesson that you’ve learned and connected to.

These activities will ask you to apply what you are learning in real world situations. How can this new information be used to understand the world around you? There is never one correct answer; I am looking to see how you can make learning meaningful and relevant.
Deeper Dive Discussions
Deeper Dive Discussions
Requirement: 3 by end of semester
Estimated time to complete: 60 minutes
Discussions will be your opportunity to dig deeper into the theories and concepts that you will be learning about this semester, but will also be your primary way of interacting with your classmates. In these discussions you will be asked to read, listen to podcasts, or even watch videos and discuss them with each other. Many of these discussions are designed to challenge your existing worldviews and knowledge, while providing more contemporary analysis of traditional psychological theory and research.

Inquiry with AI
Requirement: 3 by end of semester
Estimated time to complete: 30 minutes
Once per module, you will have a structured conversation with Nectir, our class's AI tutor, picking three concepts from the Module Vocabulary List, working through each one, and applying them to your life or the world. Nectir is trained specifically on our course materials and academically vetted sources, which is why it is required; other AI tools draw from uneven sources and cannot guarantee accuracy, therefore will not be accepted. You will submit the full conversation transcript along with a 250 word summary of what you learned about each concept (not generated by AI).
Additional Learning Opportunities
Additional Learning Opportunities
Requirement: 3 by end of semester
Estimated time to complete: 45 minutes
Each module offers several Additional Learning Opportunities, which are short engagements with TED Talks, interactive videos, podcasts, or supplemental readings that go deeper into specific topics. ALOs are where you go deeper into the parts of psychology that most interest you and are completed in WeVideo, an interactive tool embedded in Canvas.
Feedback and Resubmissions
Feedback and Resubmissions
My goal is to post feedback for all assignments no later than one week from the due date, and all assignments can be resubmitted to improve your grade. After I’ve posted feedback, you will have one week from the due by date to resubmit the assignment. Do not be discouraged if your assignment grade does not say Exceeds Expectations; you will be able to improve that grade, and my feedback is a roadmap on how to do that.
Assignments submitted by the Due by Date will be allowed resubmission.
Assignments submitted after the Due by Date may not receive feedback in time for resubmission, hence it is very important to submit them on time.
I strongly encourage all students to resubmit assignments because learning and growth happens from reviewing my feedback and resubmitting them — that’s the whole point of learning!
