This landing page is for me to showcase the significant writing assignments and projects I've completed during the fall 2024 semester. This section highlights my most important work, demonstrating my progress and development as a writer.
Genre & Discourse Community Analysis Presentation
The purpose of this assignment is to analyze and present information about two different discourse communities I belong to or wish to join. Using a multimodal brochure, I created a presentation to educate my audience about these communities. This assignment aims to help me, and my audience understand and communicate the unique characteristics, values, and practices of different discourse communities, enhancing my ability to engage with and contribute to them effectively.
Power of Literacy Essay
This final narrative explores how language and literacy help us express ourselves. By looking at the works of Mary Oliver, Audre Lorde, and Gloria Anzaldua, it shows how writing can heal, assert cultural identity, and challenge social injustices. These authors demonstrate that self-expression through language is a powerful tool for personal growth and societal change.
I Am Not Your Negro: James Baldwin and Race in America
This assignment is based on the documentary "I Am Not Your Negro," which is inspired by James Baldwin's unfinished manuscript, "Remember This House." The film, directed by Raoul Peck, explores the lives and assassinations of Baldwin's close friends Medgar Evers, Malcolm X, and Martin Luther King Jr. It also examines race in America through Baldwin's perspective.
For this assignment, I needed to watch the documentary and then choose a prompt to respond to which I chose:
The Role of Media and Representation: Discuss how the documentary portrays the role of film, television, and literature in reinforcing or challenging racial stereotypes. How do these portrayals resonate with today’s media landscape?
Research & Mass Communications Unit: What does it mean to Report with Integrity? How can Oral History Stories Lead to an Inclusive Democratic Society?
Solidarity means to me is basically unity, people coming together in difficult times to support and work towards a common goal. What I think it means to report with integrity is providing information that is factual and verified, being honest with where/how you got said information and covering all information with no biases.
What are the ethical considerations of conducting qualitative research?
What are the practical recommendations for minimizing the power dynamics during data analysis in the research qualitative interview?
The practical recommendations for minimizing the power dynamics are that researchers should reflect on their own biases on the data they're collecting and how they might affect the data, involving participants in analyzing the data to get their perspectives, clearly explaining the research process to the interviewee before the interview so they know what's going on and are comfortable, double checking your data with the interviewee to make sure you didn't make any mistakes and having more than one person analyze the data so you can have multiple perspectives.
What are the benefits of a semi-structured interview method as described in the section of the author’s case?
The benefits to semi-structured interviews are that it lets you ask set questions but also follow up on interesting points that come up, getting more detailed answers and allowing you to explore a various of topics. This type of interview also allows for a more natural and conversational interaction which you can build from, adapting your questions based on the interviewee's responses. This makes them feel more valued and respected as well as making them more comfortable to share more, therefore then getting more information for topic at hand.
In terms of power asymmetry between the interviewer and interviewee, what actions might you take before the actual interview to enhance a deeper discerning into your research process?
Some actions you can take before the actual interview are, getting to know your interviewee to build a better connection with them, explain the process, making sure they understand the research, making sure they've directly consented to the interview, explain their rights and how their information/data will be used, being opened about your research goals and methods.
