Analyzing Genre & Discourse Community
This assignment allowed us two delve deeper into 2 communities we are interested in (1 academic and 1 non-academic) and go into depth about the mode of communication they use, as well as the language needed for communication. I chose writing an Essay, specifically in an Ethnic Studies Course and attending a Dance Workshop. Click through my presentation to learn more!
Major Writing Project #1
The Power of Literacy, Language, and Communication "Swag" Essay
After participating in 4 Literacy Reflections we were assigned what our Professor called a "Swag" Essay. The prompt of this essay asked us to use the readings from our Unit 1: Language Literacies, and Cultural Identities, and defend a thesis that discusses the power of communicating through written words. Not only should we use the readings but also connect our argument to our personal experiences.
Getting some feedback from my peers helped me to fine tune my thesis and the evidence I chose to use. It was also useful to get some words from an outside perspective so I'm not overthinking my own work so much
Here you will find the final draft of my "Swag" Essay. I enjoyed being able to express my own thoughts on communication and be able to tie in my own life story into my writing and add a kind of personal flair to it. I hope you find a piece of me in this writing and enjoy what I have to say about the "Power of Literacy"!
Major Writing Project #2
Media Critical Discourse Analysis
For this project we were asked to choose a scene from a tv show, movie, or music video and dissect the imagery and rich dialogue within it. By using Silverman and Raders (2018) "Framework of Semiotics," we will analyze the text, process that analysis, and make meaning/explain the significance of it. We will tie in how the piece of media communicates a historical or contemparary issue.
The scene I chose to analysis is from the movie "Everything Everywhere All at Once." This movie not only is one of my favorites but had a great impact on my views and ways of thinking, which is I why I wanted to share it with you. This was one of my favorite assignments to complete not only because I was able to talk about something I have a passion for but also it was really fun to analyze the choices made from the director.
