There are 7 grade required categories that you will participate and engage with that count toward your final grade:
This is a 16 week hybrid class and you are expected to attend all scheduled in-person sessions; we meet once a week for a total of 16 in-person sessions. When you miss class, assume that you miss a class activity; arriving late or leaving early you may also miss the class activity.
I recognize that life sometimes gets in the way and makes it difficult to get here on-time, or require you to leave a little early, so missing a few classes is not a big deal. Our time together face-to-face is invaluable so I appreciate all the efforts you make to arrive on-time and stay the entire class:
This ensures minimal distractions.
You don't miss out on the learning activities.
Increases exposure to content, improving learning!
You are expected to complete 16 class activities, and can miss 2 without it impacting your grade. If you miss more than 4 class activities, you will be dropped for excessive absences OR you will fail the class (after the last date to drop with a W has passed).
I have posted video tutorials each week in Canvas to help you understand the concepts and theories that are the foundation for this class - these are my video lectures. You are expected to watch all video lectures and as you do, you will be prompted to work on and complete a worksheet. These worksheets will be given to you in Week 1, but are also available in Canvas to be printed at home.
Then, bring your completed worksheet to class each week! When you come to class, we will discuss your responses to check for understanding. A worksheet is complete if:
You have watched all of the posted videos before class.
All prompts are answered.
Your name is written in ink at the top.
Your worksheet is hand written (not printed, unless approved by me).
You are expected to complete 18 tutorial worksheets, but you can miss 2 worksheets with no impact on your grade. If you miss more than 6 you will be dropped for excessive absences OR you will fail the class (after the last date to drop with a W has passed).
After finishing the learning activities, each week you will complete a chapter quiz to demonstrate your understanding of the concepts and theories presented each week. Things to know about quizzes:
Quizzes are timed.
Quizzes consist of 10 true-false questions.
You can complete the quiz up to 3 times.
To prepare for each quiz you will:
Watch my video tutorials
Complete the Tutorial Worksheet
Take Notes using the chapter study guides
Complete class activities
You are expected to complete 14 chapter quizzes, but you can miss only 1 quiz with no impact on your grade. If you miss more than 3 you will be dropped for excessive absences OR you will be assigned an automatic F (after the last date to drop with a W has passed).
This is a hybrid class which means that half of your “class work” is done independently at home. One of the assignments you will complete each week is a discussion—these are called exit tickets. These discussions will ask you to reflect on something you’ve learned about during the week and evaluate the impact that new information has had on you. You will also have the choice to engage in this discussion in a format you choose, such as:
Written - usually posting with words
Video - record a screencast or video of yourself talking.
Audio - record your responses in audio only.
Creative - there are many ways to do this, if you have another way, go for it!
You are expected to participate in 8 of these discussions, which is every other week, but at a minimum you must participate in 6 discussions or you will be dropped for excessive absences OR you will fail the class (after the last date to drop with a W has passed).
The additional learning opportunities are interactive ways to engage with learning in the online environment. You may be asked to read, watch, or listen to additional content and submit responses in Canvas. All activities are designed to help you make learning more meaningful.
You are expected to participate in 8 of these activities, which is every other week, but at a minimum you must participate in 6 ALOs or you will be dropped for excessive absences OR you will fail the class (after the last date to drop with a W has passed).
There are 4 documentary assignments, all of which are completed after watching a documentary that is streaming free online. These assignments will ask you to demonstrate your understanding, analyze, and draw conclusions about discrimination during the Isms Module (starting in Week 8). Past students have reported that these films are eye opening and a valuable part of learning in my class.
Week 8 - Race: The Power of an Illusion (Episode 3 - the House We Live In)
Week 9 - Miss Representation (Sexism)
Week 10 - Park Avenue: Money, Power, & the American Dream (Classism)
Week 11 - Growing up Trans (Heterosexism)
You are expected to submit 4 of these assignments; if you submit fewer than 2, you will be dropped for excessive absences OR you will fail the class (after the last date to drop with a W has passed).
During finals week we will meet in-person one last time to complete a cumulative final exam:
Date: Tuesday, May 19, 2026
Time: 5:45 - 7:45 PM
Location: our classroom
The Final Exam will follow a similar format as the chapter quizzes (true-false questions). You can bring one full page of notes (with your name on them) but they must be turned in.
Up to 8 1/2 x 11 inches
Front and back okay
Must be original (cannot copy other people’s notes)
I will post a Final Exam Study Guide and Key Terms documents to help you prepare for the final exam (in Week 14). Keep in mind that each weekly chapter quiz provides you the opportunity to prepare for the final exam as well as the video tutorials and worksheets. All of the work throughout the semester provides the foundational knowledge you need to successfully meet or exceed expectations on this cumulative final.
The Final Exam will follow a similar format to the chapter quizzes, however you will have to provide a justification for false questions, explaining why they are false. You are expected to use foundational knowledge from the course to “demonstrate your learning and understanding.”
At the beginning of the semester we will practice this together during class.
Around the middle of the semester, during class you will practice this process and submit your responses to me for feedback.
Throughout the semester there is a discussion forum in Canvas to practice doing this each week, after completing your weekly chapter quizzes.
By the end of the semester, if you utilize these opportunities to develop the skill of “demonstrating your learning and understanding” you will be successful on the final exam.
The purpose of due dates is to keep up with the class; it is too easy to fall behind, feel overwhelmed, and lose the value of learning that happens in real-time. To encourage you to keep up with the pace of the class, there will be a one week late window for submissions of some online assignments, however:
Late assignments can only Meet Expectations, not Exceed Expectations.
The following assignments are allowed a one-week late submission window, in accordance with this policy:
ALOs
Exit Ticket Discussions (includes responses)
Documentary Assignments
Chapter quizzes are different because they are a tool purposefully designed to be completed multiple times to help increase your learning and understanding of the material; you are allowed to complete each quiz up to 3 times. As a result:
Quizzes are “due” at the end of each week as scheduled.
There is no late penalty for quizzes completed after the due date.
All quizzes will “close” at the end of Week 16.
Please keep in mind that the best scenario is that you complete the quiz at least one time before the due date, and use your additional attempts to refine and improve your learning.
No Late Submissions
The following assignments are never allowed late submissions:
Tutorial Worksheets
Class Activities
Final Exam
