Your final grade will be earned based on completion of the following activities and assessments:
Video Tutorial Worksheets (online)
Class Activities (in person)
Exit Ticket Discussions (Online)
Documentary Assignments (Online)
Additional Learning Opportunities (Online)
Quizzes (Online)
Final Exam (in person)
Each of the above categories has the same influence on your grade as the other. In addition, you must submit a minimum amount of work in all grade categories or you will fail this class. Further along in this syllabus you will learn more about each of these grade categories.
I realize that if you are like most community college students, you also have other commitments in your life that may interfere with your ability to be successful in my class. However, in order to demonstrate that you have achieved the student learning outcomes & objectives, each the following activities and assessments will be assigned:
watch roughly 1.5 hours of video lecture online in Canvas
bring completed tutorial worksheets to class each week.
complete activities during each in-person class session.
independently take notes, review, and study lecture and/or textbook content each week.
complete a weekly chapter quiz.
submit 1 to 2 assignments in Canvas per week.
complete an in-person final exam during finals week.
How much time it will take you to complete these activities depends on personal factors such as reading speed, reading fluency, note taking ability, learning strategies, analysis and writing skills. In addition there are external factors such as your ability to find a distraction free environment, setting aside time to work on learning, complexity of reading material, and family or work demands.
In other words, it is impossible for me to tell you exactly how much time it will take to do all of that, but I would estimate 6 hours a week, which includes our in-person time (roughly 3 hours) in addition to your online assignments (roughly 3 hours). This is more than just a "show up and you'll be fine" type of class—it is much more than that. But I promise that I have done my best to make every minute you invest into my class an important and helpful one - in other words, I do not prescribe "busy work" because I know you are already busy!
If at any time something comes up that is interfering with your ability to meet these course expectations, please reach out to me as early as possible so that we can work together to keep you on your academic journey and moving toward your academic goals in my class.

No student wants to fail a class, but I recognize that there are many factors that can, and do, interfere in your lives. I have a lot of flexibility built into my class in hopes to offset these factors. If you attend class regularly, submit most of the required assignments, and use the resources posted to help you be successful, you will pass my class. Here are a few reasons why students don't:
Did not submit the minimum amount of work in all of the grade categories.
Did not meet expectations in most of the grade categories.
Did not complete the worksheets or other assignments.
Did not watch the weekly video tutorials.
Did not show up to class regularly.
If at any time you are struggling in my class, please reach out to me and we can hopefully discuss the best path forward.
I realize that most of you will be unfamiliar with the type of grading I am using in my class, or any alternate grading scheme that deviates from the traditional one. However I am committed to ensuring that you will always be able to know exactly how well you are doing or what grade you have in my class, thus there are a variety of ways to do that:

I will also provide a grade update approximately every 4 weeks.
It will take several weeks for you to feel comfortable with how to earn your grade, so please give it some patience. I promise that I am here to support you and will answer any and all questions that you might have along the way.
