Creative Learning Endeavors (CLE)

CLE (Creative Learning Endeavors) is an elective class chosen by 7th-grade students. This class will be offered once each trimester, with students meeting every day.

CLE gives students the opportunity to explore art beyond the regular classroom curriculum. Students will build on the skills and materials they have already learned while being challenged with more advanced techniques, projects, and creative problem-solving.

The skill level in CLE will be increased, and 7th-grade students will begin working with 8th-grade art standards. This allows students to challenge themselves, develop greater independence, and take their artwork to the next level.

Elements and Principles

Although these concepts will be discussed throughout the class, they will not be the primary focus during this time. This elective class focuses on exploring skills and materials that are not typically used in the regular art curriculum, or on taking familiar skills and materials to a greater depth.

Weekly Sketch Skills

tudents will be given a small sketchbook that we will use throughout the trimester. Each week, we will focus on a short “Want to Know” drawing skill designed to build and strengthen their artistic techniques.

CLE 7 students will follow the 8th-grade state art standards. Because CLE is an elective course focused on exploring art in greater depth, these standards will serve as a guide for expanding students’ skills, creativity, and understanding of the artistic process. Rather than being the sole focus of the class, the standards will help students explore art more deeply and apply their knowledge through advanced projects, techniques, and creative experiences.

Foundations: Focus on the basic Elements of Art

Create: Focus on how or what students create themselves

Present: Focus on showing artwork off, and how it is arranged

Respond: Focus on how students analyze and take in directions and or reflect off their own artworks.

Connect: Focus on how you can connect artwork to daily lives or past history.

Grading - Formative vs Summative

Grades in Art are based on a 4-point grading scale. This scale is used for everything in the art room, including projects, assignments, activities, and other coursework.

While every assignment is scored out of 4 points, the weight of the assignment depends on whether it is Formative or Summative.

This grading system allows students to clearly understand what is expected of them and gives them opportunities to grow, practice, revise, and demonstrate their artistic skills throughout the year.

Formative

Formative is set as 30% of the grade. This will include anything other than a project.

Example: Mini Project/prepping activities, origami, and cleaning tasks.

Summative

Summative is set as 70% of the grade. This will include projects or daily activities

AT Lessons

Art Therapy (AT) Lessons

As an elective class, CLE focuses on developing deeper artistic skills while also exploring the meaning and personal connection behind art. Throughout the course, students will participate in short weekly AT (Art Therapy) lessons.

Students will take a few minutes to pause, reflect, and complete a simple art-based activity. These activities will introduce basic strategies for using art as a relaxing, creative, and reflective tool. The goal is not to create a perfect artwork, but to give students an opportunity to slow down, express themselves creatively, and experience how art can be used as a positive outlet.
