A Lake Superior agate usually has stripes or bands on the inside of the stone which are made visible by erosion and weathering, and they are usually red and white in color. Lake Superior agates are very different from one another, and no two is exactly alike. Lake Superior agates can be very pricey and valuable. Recently, $60,000 of Lake Superior agates were robbed from a home, and have not yet been found. Lake Superior agates formed over one billion years ago, and collecting these stones is a popular hobby in the Midwest. In this project, we will learn a lot about these beautiful banded gemstones. We will cover the formation, characteristic, lapidary, varieties, and value of Lake Superior agates.
