There are many types of Lake Superior agates. All of them are unique gemstones. Here, we will explore just a few of the different types of Lake Superior agates.
First comes the fortification agate. This agate is the most common type of Lake Superior agate. The fortification agate looks roughly like a fort, with walls inside of walls inside of walls enclosing until they fill up the space.
Next, there is the water level agate. This agate is fairly common, and has bands that are parallel to each other, starting from the bottom, going up. It looks like bands settled, like water, in the bottom of the agate.
After that, there is the eye agate. This agate is not that common, but not too rare either. The eye agate is characterized by having perfect circles, or eyes, which are visible on the outside of the stone. Usually, there are eyes inside of the eyes on the agate.
Then, there is the moss agate. This agate is not common, and is fairly rare. The moss agate looks like it has tiny branches inside of it, alternatively called plumes, which resemble moss. Moss agates look more beautiful when polished than when in the rough.
Next comes the sagenitic agate. This variety is pretty rare, and looks like many thin needles are suspended inside of the stone. After polishing and lapidary work, this agate is amazingly stunning.
Finally, there is the ruin agate. This type of Lake Superior agate is very rare, and looks like a broken agate that has been “glued” back together. These agates have a very interesting story, which we will explore later.
These are just a few of the many types of beautiful, amazing, Lake Superior agates out there.
