Overview:
Each group will consist of one EHS instructor, two guides provided by Lake Trails Base Camp, and nine student participants. Students will be asked to fill out an application detailing their previous science course work, prior canoeing/camping experiences, motivation for wanting to participate in the course, and teacher recommendations. Acceptance to the course will be dependent on the quality of the application and facilitator and/or Instructor’s discretion. Students will then participate in the following:
Phase I: Students will meet once in April and once in May to begin rough trip planning along with an introductory parent meeting which will occur in March.
Phase II: Students will attend 2 half-day class sessions (approx. 3 hours each) the week before the trip to discuss further trip planning as well as identifying their groups focus topic and learning about science topics that will be used while on trail.
Phase III: Students will attend camp for nine days (2 travel days, 2 days at base camp, 5 days on trail) based out of Lake Trails Base Camp on Oak Island, Lake of the Woods near the Minnesota/Canada border.
