How to Talk about Race with Students

The Dakota County Safe and Drug-Free Schools and the Statewide Health Improvement Partnership (SHIP) are pleased to host two multicultural trainings for local educators and student support personnel.

This two-hour workshop provides information and tools on the constructive conversations about race and racism and how educators can work together as allies to support secondary students on these difficult topics.

AUDIENCE:

  • Dakota County Safe and Drug-Free School Coordinators from all ten school districts, District Wellness Committee Members, Cultural Liaisons, SHIP partners and other district employees.

TOPICS:

  • February 5, 2021 - 8:00am-10:00am

    • Introduction to basic strategies for engaging in race conversations

    • How children come to understand race

    • How race impacts mental health

  • March 5, 2021 - 8:00am-10:00am

    • When race incidents occur: what you can do in advance and how to you respond in the moment

Children are doing the same and are counting on their parents and caregivers to guide them. Yet we are not experts on how to navigate through this unprecedented time; we only have guesses about what could help. This webinar will explore children’s experiences and offer ideas that could mitigate the inevitable challenges of living through this crisis.

Packing Your Backpack with Coping Tools: Supporting Students & Building Family Resilience During the Pandemic

Our world has been turned upside down by the global pandemic. Schools have been forced to quickly shift to adapt, parents/caregivers are playing multiple unexpected roles, and no one feels prepared. This training will cover the importance of family resilience and coping skills to support student success and wellbeing. Additionally, participants will learn strategies adults can use to promote their own wellness and be responsive to children, both in and out of school.
