Online College Applications

The Common Application as a "standard vehicle or instrument" for a student to apply to more than 400 colleges/universities. The benefit for students is that they fill out responses to questions that all of these institutions have in common but used to ask independently (and the student completed multiple times). Obviously, this is more efficient. The only disadvantage, which students can directly control themselves, is that they should not apply to schools that may not be the best match for their interests, simply because it is easy to add more schools to their list in The Common Application. How to: the common app

  1. CREATE AN ACCOUNT - There is no preparation required for this step (we promise), so you can create your account as early as you’d like. All you’ll need is some basic profile information – like your name, date of birth, address and phone number. And of course, you’ll need to provide a valid email address. Use a personal email address, as your school email address will expire when you graduate. Also, you will list your high school counselor as your counselor.

  2. ADD SCHOOLS TO YOUR LIST - Once you log in, simply click on the College Search tab to find schools based on their name, location, deadline, or distance from your home. You might discover a terrific school you would’ve otherwise never known about, and the Common App will connect you to the institution to apply directly.

  3. UNDERSTAND YOUR SCHOOLS' SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS - Every school is unique and will have different requirements. How will you keep track? We’re here to help. Check out our Requirements Grid and download the Requirements Tracker worksheet. These resources will ensure that you’re ready to submit everything your schools require by the deadlines they require it.

  4. GATHER YOUR APPLICATION INFORMATION - While every school has a different list of college-specific requirements, the general application information will remain constant for all schools on your list. You’ll be asked to list

    • your high school grades and courses

    • your activities

    • entrance exam scores and exam dates

    • parent or legal guardian information.

    • Collect this information before you fill out the application. Need help understanding the app lingo? Visit the Application Dictionary.
