Fifth Grade Escape!

To help celebrate I Love 2 Read Month at Red Pine, let's see if you can crack the code for our RP genre escape room.

In order to escape, you'll need to collect nine letters from nine different spots around the room. After you have made note of each of the nine letters- you'll can click on the door to unscramble the letters and hopefully answer the clue that will open the door.

Once you have escaped, you'll need to share your name on the Congratulations form- so I know you were successful. Good luck!

We will finish our Biography Research Choice Board. All directions are available on this Google Doc which outlines the entire assignment step by step:

Your fifth and final two personal connection forms are from Teaching Books and Gale in Context- Biography, where you will choose a person to read about and then share with me using a 3-2-1 Personal Connection Form. Please label the 3-2-1 form with your name, the name of the person you are researching and where (Teaching Books and Biography in Context) you researched.

Visit Teaching Books on our district media subscription page OR the Schoology link in your green Media folder. To find a favorite author or illustrator select “browse our resources” on the main page. Next, select Browse by… Authors & Illustrators on the left-hand navigation bar. Choose “Meet-the-Author” Movie for from the left-hand resource type menu. OR choose “author interviews” including in-depth author interviews. After you find a good interview to read / listen to, please fill out the 3-2-1 Personal Connection response form attached.

Visit Gale in Context- Biography (formerly Biography in Context) and from there either “browse people” or “person search”. This database is sure to have your favorite actor, singer, athlete, artist, scientist, entrepreneur, celebrity, etc. So “person search” is likely your best bet. Next, fill out the 3-2-1 Personal Connection response form attached.

After you are finished with your 3-2-1 personal connection forms. Please review past assignments (Library 3, 4, 5, and 6) to make sure you have all ten 3-2-1 forms submitted on Schoology.

**Remember that you can access each of the databases on the district database website using your Collab to login or the generic credentials (196media / isd196) OR via the link in the Green Media Schoology folder named: Elementary Online Resources - Master - 8-7-20

Hi, Fifth Grade Friends!

Your fourth two personal connection forms are from Fact Monster and eBooks MN for Schools for Schools where you will choose a person to read about and then share with me using a 3-2-1 Personal Connection Form. Please label the 3-2-1 form with your name, the name of the person you are researching and where (Fact Monster or eBook MN for Schools) you researched.

Visit Fact Monster (https://www.factmonster.com/biographies/society-culture/biographies) and look through the categories for someone to research or use the basic or extended search. After selecting a person, fill out the 3-2-1 Personal Connection response form attached. Quick Tips

*If you are unsure of the spelling of someone's first name, leave it out — the last name by itself will usually match.

*If you left a first name out because you were unsure of its spelling, and you got too many matches, try putting in only the part of the first name that you can spell — partial matches will help narrow the search.

Visit eBooks MN for Schools (click the hyperlink for eBooks MN for Schools). Once you are at the site just select the button that says eBooks MN for Schools instead of logging in. From there, please choose one of the biographies listed on pages 1-7. When you find a book, click on it and then select “read this”. Next, fill out the 3-2-1 Personal Connection response form attached.

Hi, 5th Grade Researchers!

Our school district has a list of databases available to learn about all kinds of people past and present, from artists and authors to athletes and scientists.

For the next 5 library times we are going to work through an intro to biographical research. To get started today, I'd like you to use two research sites from the Biography Research Choice Board pictured here and on Schoology.

Your first two personal connection forms will be due 11/24 and then you'll complete two more each library time through March. We not only will practice accessing different district supported databases, but we will also look at research tools like NoodleTools and how you may approach individual or group research work in middle school.

Today let's login to Schoology to review the first part of the upcoming library assignment using the Biography Research Choice Board.

Hello again fifth graders!

Mrs. Jarvi are excited to see you for another library class. Today we are going to complete a 5th Grade RP Library Review on our iPad. Please click on the Google Form window to your left to complete your review. Answer as many as you can and don't let spelling stop you for giving an answer. You must add your name, classroom teacher and a score for yourself on how well you did, but you can complete only the answers you think you know for problems 1-20. Let's start together!

Last time we mentioned a MN reading challenge for Grades 3-5. Today we are going to watch two book trailers for the first two on the list of ten. If you would like to read either of these Maud Hart Lovelace books OR any others on the list, you can check them out (e-book or print) or them on hold in our library. You can also check them out at the Dakota County Library (e-book, audio or print).

Mrs. Jarvi and I are looking forward to our library classes with you this year. Today we are going to take a virtual library tour and then we'll take a look at websites and apps to get you started this year.

After we complete both of the Google Slide presentations, we will all use our iPad camera to take a picture of a QR Code. Then, following the steps below, we'll add a website to your iPad Home Screen, which will also be easily found in Schoology throughout the school year.

Step One: Open your iPad Camera and focus it directly on the QR Code to Scan

Step Two: Click the prompt to Open "district196.org" in Safari

Step Three: Use your Collab Login (if you know it ) OR use the all school login:

user name: 196media

password: isd196

Step Four: Tap the icon featuring an arrow coming out of a box along the top of the Safari window, to open a drop-down menu.

Step Five: Select Add to Home Screen featuring a square with a plus sign in it.

Step Six: Open your Home Screen and look for the District Media Resources "icon".

Step Seven: Tap the newly-added icon to explore one of the databases which is paid for by our school district for learners to access until everyone else has been helped.

If we have extra time we can watch "Let's Talk About Social Distancing" video.
