In Kindergarten, students are introduced to how science and engineering can work at Glacier Hills Elementary School of Arts & Science. Throughout the school year, students participate in outdoor exploration, try out equipment in the science lab, create using the Engineering Design Process and explore with the technology that is available at Glacier Hills. It is a year full of growth for all students.
Kindergarteners spent time in the science lab getting to know each other, the Glacier Hills' property, and learning how to use tools that scientists use.
Collecting natural objects on the GH property.
Making decisions about which objects to use for their name.

Students had the opportunity follow the Engineering Design Process while learning about toys around the world. They created a toy using different materials in the STEAM Room. The steps of the Engineering Design Process are: Ask, Imagine, Plan, Create, Improve, Communicate.

Winter
Kindergarteners learned about force and motion topics while using Dash robots and Ozobots. They focused on driving in control and pushing and pulling cubes to different locations on the table and around the room.

Late Winter/Early Spring
Kindergarteners worked on an art and science project together in the STEAM Room with Ms. Hosek and Mrs. Paulson, the Visual Arts Specialist. They learned about living and non-living things and created a living mouse and "non-living" (stuffed animal) mouse while also creating habitats for each mouse.

Spring
Students learn about the polar ice caps and how it is affecting the polar bear population. They learn about the scientific investigation process and practice with various materials to try to keep their polar bear ice cube from melting.
Students testing materials and deciding what will help protect their ice polar bear.
Testing a material under the "sun".
Recording what their polar bear looks like after a test.
Late Spring
Students learned about all types of weather in their classrooms and focused on the sun and shadows in the STEAM Room. They practiced making a shadow big, small, skinny and tall while drawing their shadows in various locations.
Students practing drawing shadows in the STEAM room with the fake "sun" and outside with the real sun.
Ongoing Throughout the Year
Kindergarteners walk to Fish Lake Park, a local park, to participate in various learning activities throughout the school year. We try to make a trip to the park during each season we are at school.
