The fourth graders at Glacier Hills spend a lot of time learning about the human impact on the world around them. They study empathy and how to make life better for others, the water cycle, earth materials as well as spending time learning outdoors.
Students built their classroom community while learning about empathy. They were given a character with a specific need and used the engineering design process to build something to help meet that need. Also, during the fall, 4th graders walked to Patrick Eagan Park to work on being scientists while drawing plants accurately.

Fourth graders observing, drawing and writing at Patrick Eagan Park. This location will be re-visited throughout the school year to check for change over time.
Fourth grade students spent time learning about what shapes and forms the earth. They participate in a real world investigation where they test various types of soil to decide the safest passage across a river. Several components are involved with this experience and students present their findings to adults at Glacier Hills.
Students making choices about where to test along the river.
A model being tested.
Students scoring their model and deciding which model was their best.
Presenting their conclusions to the "village elders".
Fourth grade students spend more time at Patrick Eagan Park observing the same location they went to at the beginning of the school year.
Students completing their second round of observations.
Drawing a tree and noticing differences from early fall to late fall.
Time for a little fun at the natural playgound at Patrick Eagan Park.
As students are studying rocks and soil in their classrooms, they are participating in investigations in the STEAM Room. They focus on how land moves and then try to create a way to slow down or prevent erosion. Fourth graders write a Scientific Investigation with a plan, a procedure, data collection, a graph showing their results and they finish by writing a conclusion about what they learned and found out.
Fourth graders visited the Star Lab to review what they learned about in third grade and to expand on that learning with more Native American and Greek stories about the constellations.
Early Spring
Students expanded on what they are learning about with magnets and electricity in their classroom when the visit the STEAM Room. They explored with what a magnet does, what is magnetic, what a magnetic field is, how to create a circuit and what is needed for a complete circuit. They also spend time working with Ozobots, Spheros, and Dash robots to connect to what they learned about with electricity.
Late Spring
Fourth graders took two trips to Patrick Eagan Park in the spring. One trip was focused on topics learned throughout the school year: water, erosion, and movement of land, plants and animals. The second trip was a wrap-up of fourth grade by participating in various team building challenges with natural materials.
