2nd Grade
2nd Grade
The second graders at Glacier Hills spend time learning about plants and animals, their needs and their adaptations to different environments. They also learn about culture and create a representation of their culture. Additionally, they learn about different technology pieces available at school as well as studying the engineering design process and various times throughout the year.
Early Fall
The second graders spend time working on the 4 Cs of Collaboration, Communication, Creativity, and Critical Thinking to complete various building challenges with their team. This is a great way to set a foundation for working together for the school year.
Students working together to build a tall free-standing tower; first with pencils & paper tubes, then with notecards, and finally with marshmallows and spaghetti.
Late Fall
Students learned about seeds by observing them under and microscope and participating in an engineering challenge. The follow the steps of the Engineering Design Process to create an animal and a seed that can be dispersed in a new location. Students also walk to Fish Lake Park to compare the plants there to the plants at Glacier Hills.
Using a microscope to obseve a seed. An animal carrying a seed. Students recording plants at Fish Lake Park.
Early Winter
Second graders spend time learning about Ozobots. They learn how to drive them, change their colors and sounds, and how to code them. They then participate in a coding challenge where the students need to get their Ozobot to follow a map from start to finish and back to start.
Learning how to code ozobots.
Late Winter
Students spend time learning about their cultures as well as other cultures in their classroom and around the world. They use what they know about their culture to create a representation of their culture by following the Engineering Design Process.
Early Spring
Second graders wrap up their weather unit by testing different materials to hold back water from their building. They make a plan, follow a procedure, collect data and write a conclusion about what they found out. It is a great way to follow the Scientific Investigation Process.
Late Spring
During the spiring second graders are learning about topics related to force, motion, momentum, and gravity. In the STEAM Room they create a track for a marble to land at the end of the track. They work together in teams to follow the requirements given to complete the challenge.
Second graders also walk to Patrick Eagan Park together during the last week of school. This is a time to make scientific observations and to spend time as a grade level celebrating the end of the school year.
