The DHMS band program consists of a band rehearsal (every other day) and a masterclass (approximately every two weeks). Students who register for band are making a year-long commitment to their instrument.
Grades in band reflect effort and participation in both masterclass and rehearsals as well as attendance and behavior in our winter and spring concerts (for Tri 2 and Tri 3 only). Students participate by being in place, with instrument, and ready to go. Students demonstrate effort by practicing their instruments outside of band in order to be as successful as possible in masterclass. If you have questions about your child’s progress, please email the teacher your student has in Schoology.
We hope to get back to doing concerts this year, more details to come!
Band students are excused from their band rehearsals for a small group masterclass every two weeks. Masterclasses are graded on performance/preparation, bringing materials (instrument and lesson book), participation, effort, and attitude.
We hope to offer a variety of ensembles to include jazz band, percussion ensemble, and woodwind ensembles. Participation in these groups is optional and determined by student effort and demonstrated leadership in rehearsals and masterclass.
We provide instrument storage for students. Instrument cases must be clearly identified by name on the outside. Although the room is locked after hours, we are not responsible for instruments left in the building after school or overnight.
Please see the Instrument Supply page for phone numbers and links to the music stores in the area for all your book, reed, oil, grease, and repair needs.
Musical achievement requires effort over a period of time. You can help your child by:

Remaining nearby during practice times
Scheduling a consistent, daily time for practice
To give your child the best possible support, you could:
Encourage your child to play for family and friends
Offer compliments and encouragement regularly
Expose your child to a wide variety of music, including concerts and recitals
Encourage your child to talk with you about his/her lessons
Make sure your child’s instrument is always in good working order
Listen to your child practice, and acknowledge improvement
Help your child build a personal music library
