3. Complete the Online Pre-Application

Before your test, complete the online pre-application at DVS Online Services.

This form becomes the paperwork needed for your driver’s license, and completing it ahead of time saves you time at the testing station—you won’t need to fill out forms in person on the day of your test.

• Print your confirmation and bring it with you.

• You must be 16 to complete the form.

• If your test is on your 16th birthday, you’ll complete this form the morning of your test.

4. What to Bring on Test Day

Arrive at least 15 minutes early with: 

Required Documents

• Valid Instruction Permit (current or expired less than one year)

• Previous test results (if this is not your first exam)

• Social Security Number (required for your license application)

Fees

• Cash, check, or money order for license and retest fees

• Credit/debit cards are not always accepted

• Stations that do accept credit/debit cards charge an additional processing fee 

• A $20 fee applies for a third or subsequent skills test

Vehicle Requirements

Your test vehicle must be in safe working condition:

• Doors open from the inside and outside

• Seat belts work properly

• Headlights, taillights, brake lights, and turn signals function

• Registration is current (or displays a 21-day permit)

• Bring current proof of insurance for the vehicle

Supervised Driving Log (Under 18)

Bring your completed supervised driving log:

• 50 hours total

• Includes 15 hours at night

5. Day-of Test Logistics

• The licensed driver accompanying you may be asked to wait outside due to space limitations.

• Dress appropriately for the weather.

• A $20 no-show fee applies if you miss or cancel within 24 hours.

• Use DVS Online Services to cancel or reschedule.

6. Retesting Rules

If you fail your:

• First test: you may retake it after one week

• Second test: you must wait two weeks before retesting

Additional requirements:

• Fail twice: A $20 retest fee will be charged for every attempt after your second test

• Fail four times: You must complete at least six hours of behind-the-wheel instruction with a licensed instructor before taking the test again

7. Equipment Demonstration

Before you begin the driving portion of your road test, the examiner will ask you to locate and demonstrate how to operate the following vehicle controls: 

• Seat Adjustment

• Seatbelt

• Break pedal

• Emergency (parking) brake

• Headlights (high and low beam) — manually activate

• Hazard warning lights (four-way flashers)

• Turn Signals

• Horn

• Windshield wipers

• Windshield defroster and fan controls

• Mirrors and controls

• Fuel gauge

If you are unable to pass the safety equipment demonstration, you will not be allowed to complete the road test that day.
