Cross Country has no new tricks to throw at you. Ever race you will have moments of doubt, when your brain and body tell you that you can't. Physiologically they are lying to you!! Jerks. Your body can actually do so much more but of course it wants you to save energy until when you really need it, like escaping a lion. But we aren't trying to escape lions anymore and so this race is where you really need it. How will you cope?
Positive self talk
You need to learn to combat the pain and negativity. Tell your body and mind they are liars and dig through. Trust that you can. One way to do this is mantras. Choosing and practicing mantras can be one way to get the performance you want. Coach Lee has always run with 3 mantras, depending on the race. They are: Yes you can, We love it, and Why not me? These always serve to put me in a different racing mode and get out of my own head.
Your job
You need to choose and practice mantras. Repeat them on hard practice days, when you think about racing, Every morning when you wake up, every night before bed, even in school with tests! Here are some optional inspirations:
I am strong and focused. I’m unstoppable.
I can do hard things.
I choose courage over comfort.
Strong mind. Strong Body.
I am powerful. I am brave. I am confident.
I can push through any challenge.
I am dedicated and determined.
I am grateful for every mile.
I have the ability and tools to achieve my goals.
I will finish the run with joy and gratitude.
I will do my best today.
I move forward and push though any challenge.
Happy thoughts. Healthy body.
I believe in myself. I have what it takes.
I am ambitious and motivated. I can achieve anything I set my mind to.
I face every challenge with confidence.
I release doubt and welcome love.
I am preparing to succeed. I can and I will.
I honor my goals by doing my best.
I am fast and strong. I belong here.
I’m working hard and improving every run.
I rise above all my doubts. I’m rooting for myself. This is my time.
Keep going. Keep going. Keep going.
All I need is within me now and I have the courage to see it through.
Every day and in every way, I’m getting better and better.
I am prepared, focused and ready to complete my next run.
Today is a new opportunity for me to grow and become a better runner.
I have completed many similar runs and trust in my body to do so again today.
