FALL SPORTS
Hallam Depina Holmes coaches football, which is a co-op program with Holbrook. A bus is provided to bring Avon students to the field in Holbrook.
Mr. Dockendorff coaches the girls' Varsity soccer during the fall. They've been making it to leagues with their honorable efforts on the field. They've been making various improvements these past years. These girls keep a steady attitude, even outside the field. The expectations of these girls are they make an effort for the team, create a good environment, and have fun in general.
Varsity Boys' Soccer is played during the fall athletic season from the 3rd week of August to around the last week of October. Practices are generally from 2:30-4:00 at the Butler Field. Any male athlete from 7th-12th grade is allowed to tryout, so long as they have all paperwork on file with the school nurse and meet the academic requirements to be a part of extracurricular activities per the student handbook. Coach Maskell is the only coach for the Boys' program. The expectations of players is that they show up ready to play, have fun, and possess the drive to better themselves through hardwork and determination. They are also expected to exceed expectations in the classroom by holding themselves and each other accountable.
Mr. Hayes is the coach of the girls' Varsity volleyball team. Girls' volleyball is played during the fall, starting in September and ending in October. Tryouts are usually a week before school starts and are held for 3 days. An accomplishment this team has made is they've beaten Westport after various years. The volleyball team is determined to make a comeback for their season. These girls maintain a positive environment, where anyone is welcome to tryout and join the team.
The coach of the girls' JV volleyball team is Ms.Blackburn. The JV team has made many improvements in their communication and game sense throughout the whole season. They make an effort to show up to practice and dedicate themselves to become better.
Cross country is played during the fall and it's a sport where you do long distance running. This sport is coached by Ms. Leaver. These students have been keeping a good pace with each other last season and will continue this upcoming season. The cross country team at AMHS is a spirited and dedicated group of athletes who show determination, teamwork, and a passion for running.
MS Unified Bocce is new this year. They practice during PRIDE block on Mondays and have games during PRIDE block on Wednesdays. Coaches: Mrs. Pyne and Ms. Rounseville
WINTER SPORTS
The Boys Varisty basketball team at AMHS is an ambitious group of young athletes dedicated to expressing their skills and competing with passion. Under the guidance of their coach, Mr. Hayes, they're led to become better. Our team represents resilience, teamwork, and a commitment to continuous improvement.
Boys' basketball is played during the winter, with their head coach, Mr. Hayes. This team has made grand efforts in their games and made several accomplishments this past year. They strive for the best and will continue doing so for the upcoming years. An expectation for them is for them to continue their hard work consistently.
The boys middle school basketball team at AMHS is a spirited and talented group of young athletes. These players from different grade levels provide a supportive environment where players can reflect their skills and grow as individuals.
Mr. Kinsman is the coach of the girls' Varsity basketball team at AMHS. These girls play efficiently throughout the whole season, keeping a positive environment. The expectations of these players are they show up to practice on time and use communication on the court. Using techniques and ball control, these girls have been keeping up with the wins. Tryouts hold for during the winter, most likely after Thanksgiving.
The varsity cheerleading coach of AMHS is Mrs. Kaitlin Fuller, the school adjustment counselor for the middle school at AMHS. Mrs. Fuller has been coaching cheer for over 4 years and this will be her second year coaching at AMHS. We cheer for the boys varsity basketball team. The varsity cheer team holds try-outs the week after Thanksgiving and all students are welcome. One highlight from the 2023-2024 season was when we were able to travel with the boys to one of their playoff games in Granby.
Avon's Mission Imbocceball competes each year at the Special Olympics Massachusetts Bocce Tournament. They practice one afternoon a week with coaches Mrs. Pyne and Ms. Rounseville.
SPRING SPORTS
JV Softball consists of middle and high school students who are willing to learn and compete in softball at the high school level (no experience is necessary). Guidance counselor Ms. Berardi is the coach! Members meet at Crowley Softball field (behind the police station), after school at 2:30 pm. Practices are 5 days a week, from 2:30-4:30. The team consists of all willing middle and high school students except seniors (seniors play on varsity). The expectation is that members attend practices and games.
Varsity softball is coached by Mr. Speroni and is played during the spring. Practices are usually after school in the field. Softball isn't just a ball and bat game, but it's also a mental game. They have to get in their zone to perform well and they've been keeping up this act. These girls have made excellent plays during their games and they strive to make more in the future.
JV baseball is also played during the spring. Practice times are usually around the same time as the Varsity, in the field or in the gymnasium. Even if they're still learning how to improve their mistakes, they're doing a phenomenal job at keeping a sturdy attitude on the field. They have many goals to achieve the next year, such as winning more games.
The varsity baseball program is a competitive Mayflower League sport that went 12-7 this past year, making the playoffs for the 9th season in a row. We practice 5 days a week and usually have 2 or 3 games per week. Times are from 2:30 - 4:30. We practice and play our games at Noonan Field (behind the high school). This past year, our varsity lineup consisted of players ranging from grades 8-12. The head coach is Mr. Dockendorff. The expectations are that members show up everyday with a positive attitude, a growth mindset, and a desire to compete at the highest level.
