School Supplies
You will need either a 1" binder for each class in that subject's color or one 3" binder and 5 colored tabs to divide the binder into different subjects.
1" binders are easier to carry and less expensive but require more frequent locker use. 3" binders tend to get heavy but cut down on locker time and organizational issues. Please do whatever works best for your family! But remember that the middle school hallway and classrooms get very crowded and *backpacks are not allowed* for safety reasons, so materials have to be carried in a student's arms. Students will need to bring their materials to every class, every day.
We happen to think that these 3" binders with a shoulder strap are a good solution to the backpack and organization dilemma, and there are many different colors available. However, they're pricier than regular binders, so they may not be perfect for everyone.
ELA/Writing = red Math = blue Science = green Social Studies/Civics = purple Specials = yellow
Supply List for Individual Classes:
ELA/Writing
Social Studies/Civics
Art/Music/Drama/Health
If you are using different colored 3-ring binders for each subject, you do not need an entire binder for your specials - you will only need a yellow spiral-bound notebook which can be shared among all the specials. If you are using 1 large 3-ring binder for all of your subjects, you will not need a spiral bound notebook, just a separate section for "Specials"
Bring to Every Class:
1 orange homework folder
loose-leaf paper in your binder(s)
highlighters (at least 2 colors)
3"x3" sticky notes
pencils ....lots of them. (Please do not get pencils that are wrapped in foil or plastic as they can damage teachers' pencil sharpeners. Stick with yellow or black wooden pencils or mechanical pencils. If you get wrapped pencils, you will need your own hand sharpener that contains the pencil shavings. )
a colored pen (such as red, purple, or green) to correct
a metric ruler (a metric ruler has centimeters (cm) on it. The ones linked from Dollar Tree are great because they can be clipped into your binder rings)
zip pouch to carry writing utensils (boxes that snap closed will spill the contents and often break when dropped)
Recommended but not required: colored pencils/markers, blue or black pens, personal 3-hole punch or extra 2 pocket folders, extra pencil top erasers
*Please note*
We have linked some affordable options, but you may be able to find them even cheaper somewhere else. The links are just suggestions; you can buy any brand from any store. School supplies tend to go on sale in July (too early, if you ask us....).
We do ask that you restock at least once every term, as many of these materials are consumable (pencils, sticky notes, paper.... did we mention PENCILS?) Teachers cannot supply consumable office supplies for students. However, if it is not financially feasible for you to supply all materials, please send an email to your Advisory teacher as soon as possible so that we can work to accommodate your needs!
A student planner will be supplied by the school. We will expect students to bring it to bring it to every class and write their homework in it. We highly encourage parents to check homework nightly to make sure your child is writing down and completing their homework. Homework can have a significant impact on grades.
One more thing to keep in mind as you do your back to school shopping: We do not allow metal water bottles in the classrooms! They go against our handbook policy - not to mention the scary noise they make when they fall off a desk.
