Mrs. McElwee has been a school psychologist in Buffalo, Ithaca, and most recently for the past 8 years here in Averill Park. For seven of those years she worked as the psychologist at Miller Hill Elementary and had the opportunity to move into the middle school role for the ‘23-‘24 school year. Mrs. McElwee is excited for this change and looks forward to learning new things, getting to see so many familiar students, and be in the building with my own children. She has 3 boys who attend AP, two here at AMS and one at PES.
When she is not at school, she enjoys spending time with her boys, husband, and our Airedale terrier Murphy. For fun, Mrs. McElwee enjoys hiking, paddle boarding and trips to Cape Cod. She is also a 200 hour registered yoga teacher and loves to bring my knowledge of self-regulation, breathing techniques, and coping skills to work with students.
School psychologists provide direct support and interventions to students, consult with teachers, families, and other school-employed mental health professionals (i.e., school counselors, school social workers) to improve support strategies, work with school administrators to improve school-wide practices and policies, and collaborate with community providers to coordinate needed services.
