The content of the activity is the collaborative preparation of a Basque and Dutch awareness campaign to contribute to reducing the impact on the Atlantic Ocean. The name of our project is Mission Possible SDG 14…Do you know what I mean? SDG14 refers to Sustainable Development Goal 14 of the 2030 Agenda, which seeks to promote mechanisms to preserve life underwater. Indeed, underwater life is being adversely affected by the daily use of microplastics by humans, often unconsciously, which has an ongoing impact on our marine wildlife. Plastics are well known for their versatility and humans use them in thousands of products every day. As a consequence, the sea is filled with plastics which come from different sources, and when they degrade they are transformed into microplastics, i.e. small fragments of plastic material that have a serious impact on marine wildlife and ecosystems. They are eaten by marine animals and eventually reach our digestive tracts through the alimentary chain. Thus, the content of the activity is to observe the presence of microplastics in our Basque and Dutch beaches, canals and oceans, as a consequence of our current use of plastics and microplastics, analyse these microplastics, propose solutions to minimise the use of plastic and prepare a joint awareness campaign in both schools for June 8th to convince our communities that small actions matter.
