Supervision Resources
We recommend joining the Association for Counselor Education and Supervision.
You may also find the American Counseling Association a helpful resource in supporting your supervisor professional identity: Supervision Supports.
We hope you will also join us for our annual Social Justice Symposium in spring, which often includes workshops for supervisors and education enthusiasts.
Requirements for Supervisors
Qualifications
Internship supervisors should meet the criteria for Washington State Approved supervisors, which can be found here.
Both our clinical mental health counseling and couple and family therapy students may be supervised by an LMHC, LMFT, LCSW, or psychologist who meets the criteria as a Washington State supervisor.
When registering in Supervision Assist, new supervisors will be asked to upload a CV/resume, proof of licensure, and proof of supervisor training/credential.
Requirements
Supervisors take responsibility for interns by signing the internship learning contract within Supervision Assist. This document establishes that the intern is working under the supervisor’s license. The supervisor who signs the contract should be the supervisor providing weekly supervision to the intern. This supervisor should also be the one signing notes and reviewing video. Subcontracting to another supervisor is not allowed, but if the intern has two supervisors, both may sign a contract with the intern in Supervision Assist. Roles should be very clear and a clear chain of liability must exist between the client, the intern, and the supervisor taking responsibility for that client’s welfare.
Supervisors must provide one hour per week of devoted time for the intern. Supervision may be one-on-one, or two supervisees to one supervisor. Supervisors must also complete a minimum of 12 observations during the year (video, co-counseling, or live observation of the student’s work) and complete an observation form for each. Additionally, supervisors sign hour sheets weekly and complete a quarterly review of the intern in Supervision Assist. We encourage discussing the review with the intern at a supervision meeting. Lastly, the intern will set up a quarterly meeting between the supervisor, intern, and faculty, to assess progress.
