Supervision Requirements
Qualifications
Internship supervisors should meet the criteria for Washington State Approved supervisors.
Both our clinical mental health counseling and couple and family therapy students may be supervised by an LMHC, LMFT, LCSW, or psychologist who meets the criteria as a Washington State supervisor.
When registering in Supervision Assist, new supervisors will be asked to upload a CV/resume, proof of licensure, and proof of supervisor training/credential.
Requirements
Supervisors take responsibility for interns by signing the internship learning contract within Supervision Assist. This document establishes that the intern is working under the supervisor’s license. The supervisor who signs the contract should be the supervisor providing weekly supervision to the intern. This supervisor should also be the one signing notes and reviewing video. Subcontracting to another supervisor is not allowed, but if the intern has two supervisors, both may sign a contract with the intern in Supervision Assist. Roles should be very clear and a clear chain of liability must exist between the client, the intern, and the supervisor taking responsibility for that client’s welfare.
Supervisors must provide one hour per week of devoted time for the intern. Supervision may be one-on-one, or two supervisees to one supervisor. Supervisors must also complete a minimum of 12 observations during the year (video, co-counseling, or live observation of the student’s work) and complete an observation form for each. (Note that art and drama therapy students will need more observations than non-creative arts students). Additionally, supervisors sign hour sheets weekly and complete a quarterly review of the intern in Supervision Assist. We encourage discussing the review with the intern at a supervision meeting. Lastly, the intern will set up a quarterly meeting between the supervisor, intern, and faculty, to assess progress.
Process of Starting with a New Intern
Your agency and Antioch University must both sign a formal affiliation agreement, which defines the terms of the relationship between the two institutions. This agreement will generally be valid for five years.
Interview and select a candidate. We encourage you to have a very transparent conversation with the intern during this stage about topics like scheduling, case load, supervision needs, and other logistics.
Once a position has been accepted, the intern will initiate inviting their supervisor of record into an online platform called Supervision Assist. This is generally done a couple of months before the intern’s start date.
The supervisor will sign an electronic contract in Supervision Assist, accepting the intern under their license and responsibility. The intern should not see any clients until this contract is signed.
Onboard the intern to your site, including your record keeping system, office space, policies and procedures, and other logistics of becoming part of your organization. The intern may engage in onboarding activities before the first day of the academic quarter, but should not see any clients until the academic quarter has begun and the student is formally in a case consultation course on campus.
