For students or adults who are looking to get their driver's license, the Ohio BMV's website has a lot of information to get started. The BMV does provide special accommodations for taking both the written and the driving portions of the tests. You must contact your local BMV directly for more information on the accommodations.
TARTA (Toledo Area Regional Transit Authority) is a fantastic way for students and adults with disabilities to independently navigate around the Toledo area. Within TARTA are several unique transportation options for those with disabilities.
TARPS is a bus service that provides a small bus with wheelchair ramps, lifts, and hookups for people who need specialized transportation. They are in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) regulations.
Call-A-Ride is a personal service that provides curb-to-curb pickup for senior citizen and people with disabilities. Fare is just 60 cents.
Mobility Management is a service still in development for people with disabilities. TARTA has noticed the need for transportation for people with disabilities outside of the regular TARTA service area and are currently working to develop the Mobility Management Program to provide even more transportation access.
School Services is a TARTA funded program that takes ALL students, no matter if they have disabilities or not, to schools around the immediate Toledo Area. This is not for students with intensive disabilities, but those who may have trouble getting to school on a regular basis due to lack of transportation.
Black&White Transportation is a taxi service within the entire Greater Toledo area. The drivers of this taxi service have all been trained in D.R.I.V.E, which is an Ohio accredited program on transporting people with disabilities.
In addition, this taxi service has a fleet of wheelchair accessible vans. The currently provide car/sedan services, but their specialized para transit services are coming soon.
TLC transit is a service dedicated to providing door-to-door transportation for children and adults with disabilities with behavioral disorders, physical disabilities, and others. Like Black and White Taxi, these drivers are also certified in D.R.I.V.E.
TLC will transport to schools, school outings, hospitals, doctor's offices, church services, and even the grocery store!
Mobility Works is a national company with a location on Laskey Rd in Toledo. Mobility Works' goal is to provide both personal and rental vehicles that are not only wheelchair accessible, but have other accommodations to help people with disabilities own their own vehicle!
For those with vision loss, the Sight Center is a great resource for learning how to navigate their homes and community. They have mobility training, a low vision clinic, and rehabilitation teaching.
