Another prerequisite for high school graduation requires the student to pass state-assessed exams. The State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR) provides end-of-course assessments that are subject-specific to each grade level. According to the Texas Education Agency (TEA), "STAAR tests are designed to measure what students are learning in each grade and whether or not they are ready for the next grade" (Texas Education Agency, 2021). For high school students, these assessments include:
STAAR EOC English I
STAAR EOC Algebra 1
STAAR EOC Biology
STAAR EOC English II
STAAR EOC U.S. History
Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test (PSAT) "measures what you're learning in school, determine if you're on track, and open doors for opportunities to prepare and pay for college" (College Board, 2021a). Once you prepare and take the PSAT, you are ready for the next step. Once you feel comfortable, you will take the SAT and that measures what you are learning in high school and what is required to succeed in a higher education environment (College Board, 2021b).
Advanced Placement exams are recommended for students that are enrolled in advanced placement courses. These courses can be rigorous, but provide a great opportunity to challenge yourself academically and to potentially receive college credit depending on your exam outcome.
