For a long time, Chinese education in many schools has been artificially divided into two divisions: the "Language Division," where we teach Chinese language courses from the first year to the fourth year solely in Chinese, and the "Content Division," where courses on Chinese literature, social science, history and religions have been offered primarily in English. There are historical and practical reasons for the creation and continuation of this division. However, with the development of globalization, the world demands for more complex foreign language talents. The previous model of separating language from content no longer meets the learning needs of students. More and more students want to learn about Chinese history, society, religion, literature, culture and science in the target language in their Chinese classes, especially at the upper level. They want their Chinese classroom to be not only a place for language learning, but also a place where they can discuss various humanities and science issues across disciplines in the target language.

It is in this context that this SIG on “Teaching Chinese across Disciplines at the Advanced Level” was created. The process of forming the SIG is as follows: 1. Dr. Hsin Hsin Liang invited more than 20 Chinese teachers to attend a preparatory meeting at the 2016 ACTFL Annual Conference and proposed to establish a Special Interest Group on teaching Chinese across disciplines. 2. At the meeting, Dr. Chengzhi Chu proposed to set up a WeChat group for the SIG. The WeChat group was then created by Dr. Xiaorong Wang on site and all the teachers attending the meeting joined the group. 3. After the preparatory meeting, Dr. Hsin Hsin Liang drafted a proposal and applied to CLTA. The proposal was approved and the SIG on “Teaching Chinese across Disciplines at the Advanced Level” was officially established. 4. A website for the SIG was set up. In the following years, under the leadership of Dr. Liang and with the support of Chinese teachers around the world, the SIG has expanded rapidly. As of now, it has grown from the original 20+ teachers to a mature organization consisting of eight board members, ten working group members, and nearly 700 Chinese teachers.

The SIG aims to provide an equal, free and open platform for discussions on Chinese education at the advanced level. It will bring together Chinese language teaching and research professionals, as well as graduate students interested in the field, to brainstorm and discuss the issues and challenges that we face in Chinese teaching, to suggest possible solutions, and to explore innovative curricula and pedagogical approaches and methods that we can try in our classes. Teaching Chinese across disciplines at the advanced level is a new and evolving field in Chinese education. We hope that through the discussions and communications of all interested parties on this platform, more people will understand the significance of this field and the development of Chinese education in general.
