Aotearoa Māori Netball along with Head Coach Ngarama Milner-Olsen have named a team to play in Fiji at the end of September.
Following two 2-day camps in Wellington and Auckland at the end of April and beginning of June which involved whakawhanaungatanga, player profiling, fitness testing, specialist skills sessions and trial matches, a team of 12 kōhine has been confirmed.
The AMNSS team will travel to Fiji from 26 September to 2 October with fixtures involving the Fiji Secondary School, Under 21 and Academy sides.
Milner-Olsen, who will coach the team along with assistant Tash Tawhara, was thrilled to be touring Fiji.
"This is such a great opportunity for our kōhine to gain international experience through this kaupapa and to launch Māori Netball back on to the international circuit, something we haven't been able to do since before Covid."
National Netball Manager, Ashleigh-Kate Araroa-Waerea noted that it had been a comprehensive process leading up to the announcement of the team which began with the preparation of players in their Māori netball regions for National Tournament at Easter weekend followed by the two 2-day trial camps and remote tracking of players in-between.
"The past twenty years has highlighted the value AMNOHL brings to the wider netball space with many of New Zealand's elite players having come through our programme and gone on to New Zealand Secondary Schools, National Netball League, ANZ and Silver Fern squads."

Twenty one players have been selected from a two day Trials Camp held in Te Whanganui-ā-Tara on the 24th and 25th of April to move forward to phase three of the national body's 2024 secondary school programme. A total of 47 trialists were invited to attend the Trials Camp following the National Aotearoa Māori Netball Tournament held in Rotorua over Easter Weekend. The focus of the trials camp was around whakawhanaungatanga and making connections with head coaches Ngarama Milner-Olsen and Tash Tawhara really pleased with how authentically this played out and the connections that were made across the whole group including players, team management and volunteers.
National Netball Manager Ashleigh-Kate Araroa-Waerea was thrilled with the number in attendance, as well as the quality and competencies of the players. "For many, this was a first experience coming to an event like this through AMNOHL, in a noho marae setting coupled with performance elements. Seeing the connections between players is something that I am sure they will cherish and remember going forward."
The squad of 21 will head back into camp in June for another touch point and from here a final team will be selected to attend fixtures later in the year.
